Data Recovery Symptom & Solution Guide

Fortunately, Data Recovery is an operation that rarely needs to be run. Discus provides the tools needed to rebuild logs, index files, and even pages in the event of corruption. Choosing the right recovery tool will allow you to repair any damage in the shortest possible time, and to avoid the potential damage of running a tool that resets your correct data back to a default state.

Damaged Thread/Topic Lists

Use Data Recovery - Tree to reindex your board, and then use Appearance Manager - Regeneration to regenerate your pages with the repaired tree data, if you see:

  • "Empty" threads (in tables2/3, a folder icon, but all other fields are blank)
  • Incorrect post count, page count, last modified date, last poster name

Use Data Recovery - Pages to rebuild the affected page if you see:

  • Thread list truncated (threads actually missing from the list)
  • No threads at all on a page that should contain a thread list
  • Error message about failing to open a particular page

Use Data Recovery - Topics to rebuild the topics page if you see:

  • Missing topics from the topics page (NOTE: be sure that the topics don't appear in Topic Manager -- if they do, they're hidden from the topics page or you aren't authorized to read them)
  • Topics appear in the user interface but they do not appear in Topic Manager

Malfunctioning Searches

Use Data Recovery - Search to rebuild the search index if you see:

  • Keyword search not returning any results

Use Data Recovery - Tree to reindex your board if you see:

  • Search results on the wrong page

Use Data Recovery - Other to maintain "mini-logs" if you are running freeware Discus or Discus Pro without the MySQL option, and you see:

  • By-date searches of 7 days or less don't work, but by-date searches of 8 days or more work

Use Data Recovery - Other to "Clean & Repair Posting Logs" if you see:

  • By-date searches return incomplete results
  • Search results on non-existant pages are found
