Options Manager -- User Profile Display

This option is set from the Profiles tab of the Options Manager interface.

Introduction

The "User Profile Display" feature of Discus Pro creates a browseable, searchable list of all registered accounts that can be accessed through the user interface. This "Member List" is a convenient way for forum visitors to learn about other members in a way other than by reading posts.

Allow display and searching of registered users in the User Interface: Check this box to enable the member list display. On some skins, this will immediately turn on a "Member List" link in the user interface to allow this function to be accessed (regeneration of the board may be necessary to apply this link to all pages).

Basic Settings

Who may view user list: You can choose any of the following settings:

  • Anyone: Anyone with access to your board can view the member list. This includes unregistered guests who may be viewing your board.

  • Registered users and moderators: Any registered user or moderator who has logged in can view the member list.

  • Moderators only: Only moderators can view the member list.

Frame to open profiles: The member list will typically include a link to view a member's full profile. Control which frame this link opens in by selecting one of the options here.

  • No window control: Opens the profile in whatever window or frame the member list is displayed in. (There is no 'target' attribute given to the link with this setting.)

  • Top frame (replaces frameset): Opens the profile with a 'target' of '_top' so that the profile will replace any frameset that is present. The profile will replace everything in the current window.

  • New window: Opens a new window with the profile. This is the most common setting.

  • "Main" frame: This is useful only in custom configurations. Those who have customized their frameset will appreciate this explanation: a 'target' of 'Main' will be used for the link. This setting will rarely be the one to choose, unless you have a specific reason to use it.

Fields

There are two selection boxes to choose the fields that will be displayed on the member list. To make selections, click on the entries in the selection boxes. Hold down the CTRL key (or for Mac users: the apple key) to make multiple selections in the boxes.

There is an important difference between the Available fields box and the Default selected fields box.

Available fields controls the fields that could be shown on the member list. Select any fields from this list that you ever want to be viewable. Any fields that you do not select cannot be displayed within the member list.

Default selected fields controls the fields that are shown by default when someone invokes the member list screen. For most users, this will control the display that is always seen, since most users won't view the search options and select additional fields.

Note that if you have selected by default a field that is not marked as available, that field will not be shown. This is because regardless of the defaults you select, only available fields are eligible to be displayed.

Groups

Select the group(s) of users or moderators that are eligible to be displayed in your member list. To make selections, click on the entries in the selection boxes. Hold down the CTRL key (or for Mac users: the apple key) to make multiple selections in the boxes.

(Moderator Accounts): Select this if you want moderator accounts to be shown within the member list.

(All User Groups): Select this if you want all user accounts, regardless of group membership, to be displayed in the member list. If you've selected this option, selecting individual user groups is pointless, since you've already chosen to display all users.

Specific Groups: If you have not chosen to display all user groups, select the specific groups of users whose accounts will be shown in your member list. Users who are not members of the selected groups will not be shown on the member list.

Other defaults

Default results period: Select the default "last access time" filter for the member list. A selection of "Last _______" will cause only those members who have accessed the board within that time period to be displayed. "Any time" will display any user who has ever logged in to the board. "Include All" shows all users, regardless of whether they have ever logged in or not.

Default results per page: Choose the number of members that are listed on each page.

Default sort order: Choose the field on which the member records are sorted by default. Most common choices for this option are username or last access time.

Miscellaneous options

Allow users to prevent themselves from being listed: If checked, users and moderators are given an option in their profiles to prevent themselves from being listed on the member list. If this box is not checked, any eligible member will be listed.

Force picture size: If checked and dimensions are supplied, if profile pictures are shown in the member list, they will always be of the size you choose here.

Use text instead of icons for navigation up and down list: By default (with this box unchecked), navigation in the member list is accomplished with icons. For a text-only interface, check this box.

Inactive and suspended users

By default, any user that is suspended, banned, or queued is not displayed on the member list. In general, these defaults should be respected. However, if you want to display suspended, banned, or queued users on your member list, check any of these boxes to do so.

  • Banned users: Any user whom you have banned will be displayed on the member list if you check this box. (Generally this is a bad idea.)

  • Queued users: Users who have applied for accounts but have not been accepted yet as members will still be displayed in the member list with this box checked.

  • Suspended users: Users whom you have suspended will still be displayed in the member list with this box checked.

  • Users awaiting agreement to terms: With this box unchecked, users whom you have suspended through User Manager with a yes/no activation condition are hidden from the member list until they agree to your terms. If you check this box, users will still be listed even though they have not agreed to the terms.

  • Users awaiting e-mail activation: With this box unchecked, users who must activate their accounts with an e-mail activation key but have not done so are hidden from the member list until they activate their accounts. If you check this box, users will be listed even though they have not yet activated their accounts.
