July 2003 Vol.5 No.6   Conference/Workshop Calendar
 Editorial

In this edition of the Technology and Physical Education I would like to focus on techniques and programs that will serve as a public relations tool to sell and preserve the ways to publicize what we really do as physical educators. This will come in the form of innovative technology, software, resources, web links, and multimedia presentations. In this way, the students will interact with their parents, and in turn, will involve the school’s administration and community/ school board .

Also, there will be valuable information that includes activities that can be done during the summer months that may act as a carryover to the next school year. Hopefully, this practical review will be used as an impetus to connect with the start of school for a sequential progression of previously learned skills.

Please check the previous issues / archives to completely understand the progression and direction of each issue.

REALITY DV

Dv (digital video) camcorders are more popular than ever, and here are some fundamentals that you may find yourself wondering what you’re missing.

  • Many camcorders are much smaller and easier to use than the older analog models(8mm, Hi 8 and S-VHS)
  • The most prominent selling point is overall image and sound quality. They reproduce richer , more accurate color.
  • Image stabilization- helps smooth the herk and jerk out of the footage .
  • Offers scene transitions such a swipes , fades and dissolves
  • Features a digital zoom , which uses an electronic method of pixels for ultra long lens close-ups
  • Most cameras have some type of infrared night mode for low light conditions
  • The ability to edit digital video from the comfort of your own PC is a most persuasive argument in favor of the camcorder
  • Has the ability to also take snapshots with a media card

BE YOUR OWN STUDIO
The first thing you will need is a firewire(IEEE 1394) interface and most all DV cams include that terminal and the ports on the computer are becoming standard but a firewire card can easily be added to the expansion slot in back of your computer. A cable will be inserted from the DV cam into the port for movies to be edited .

You’ll need video editing software that usually comes with the cam or an easy download such as Windows Movie Maker{ see my previous issue(March-April) on the Movie Maker}. There are other products available like Adobe, Pinnacle and dazzle for a moderate cost.

If you have a CD-R or DVD-R drive, many video editing programs let you burn your footage straight to a Video CD or DVD without ever leaving the digital domain.

WAYS TO USE THE DV in PE?

  1. Take video footage of the class in action for education week to show the parents what really goes on in physical education.
  2. Practice skill progression techniques that can be shown on a TV for an easier understanding or review
  3. Assesment and or fitness testing
  4. Class procedure / behavior modification / substitute folder
  5. Place the entire curriculum /unit plan activites on a DVD for a complete one year scrapbook or memory book.(digital)
 Summer Activities

During the school year it is imperative that you implement homemade equipment and or make a fitness calendar each month that the students can use during the summer vacation. In this way, they will become more creative and make up their own activities and get off the “couch”. Here are some ideas for those situations:

  • Used dryer sheets for juggling scarves
  • Used dryer tubes for relay batons
  • Water balloons for throw and catch like egg toss
  • Pizza tray for a frisbee
  • Clothespins for a snap=on tag game
  • Plungers( Dollar Store) amd insulation foam/duct tape for a tee ball set up
  • Helium ballons for volleyball striking
  • Water”noodles” for throwing/javelin skills
  • Soda pop cans for bowling activities – stacked up in pyramid style
  • Milk jugs for light weights with water or sand insertion
  • Old bedsheets for parachute skills or ball transfer activities
  • Older beach towels for ball transfer activies over a CLOTHESLINE for volley skills
  • 2 liter soda pop containers for striking skills
  • Nylon and coat hanger attached for striking skills
  • Old socks placed in back pockets for tag activities; place tennis ball in tube sock for catching skills
  • Old tire for combative – tug of war activity
  • Bike tube for resistance exercises
  • Used bike tire for hula hoop
  • Fitness bag – given to students with task cards
  • Newspaper – integrated activity to find letters and locomotor skills from the text J=jump; L=leap; H=hop; R=run; S=skip

 Featured Articles

There are a myriad of ways to keep the students interested and updated on what will be done and accomplished during the school year. In all of these avenues , it is suggested that by using innovative technology, bulletin boards, digital and video presentations and resources / weblinks may be very effective technique that can be used as a public relations activity to “sell” our programs.

This can come in the form of assessments, fitness calendars, seasonal / behavior incentive programs, digital pictures, homepages, homework, and cross-curricular fitness tests found at available Internet sites. In any event, these topics will serve as a reminder to the parents that physical education is a viable part of the school curriculum.

By using integration activities, you can incorporate interest in both technology and core subject area to correlate with physical education. For the older students, visit SPORTSFIGURES to integrate math and physics to find lesson plans and worksheets for a rewarding and exciting experince that provides an athletes perspective to supplement teaching tools.

A similar site is FEAR OF PHYSICS that uses the laws of physics on how to make a jump shot, catch a ball and to learn about velocity and acceleration skills related to physical education. Another archive site is EXPLORATORIUM that shows ball trajectory in hitting and fielding skills.

In the classroom/gym setting there are exemplary ways to promote interest and excitement that have a “fitness for a lifetime “ value:

Bulletin boards – place school records, digital pictures, class of the month and clip art incentives for character education.

Seasonal /behavior sheets – make a clip art selection for each class and monitor each day using Hellison’s model for proper decorum. Use the artwork and color a portion of the picture for one month to determine the classes direction and behavioral/social skills

Fitness calendar – make a calendar from HEWLETT-PACKARD with fitness activities for each day that the students take home and share with their family each month. Included at this site are examples of download art that can make Sports Illustrated covers, trading cards and magnetic photos.

Homepages /homework- make a PE school homepage to highlight student skills and information. Include homework and web sites for resources. This will be a great way to demonstrate what is included in the school PE curriculum.

FITNESS TEST – involve the students in an integrative activity with other states and countries. It can be found at TELE-OLYMPICS that shows the students competing in track and field events . This is a wonderful tool to demonstrate working in the global community.

MULTI=MEDIA – use presentation activities to display knowledge of technology and software resources to incorporate advanced skills in the core subject area. This will provide information that will entice a well-rounded education:

· Power point presentation

· Digital and video resources

1. Digital camera

2. Camcorder

3. Smart board

4. Scanners

5. Zip drives

6. CD /DVD burner

· Heart monitors

· Pedometers

GYM SHOW – have a school presentation for the parents to show what has been learned in class :

· Rope jumping

· Obstacle course

· Skill progression

· Tumbling routines

· Novelty / skits

Invite the school principals and community to acknowledge the preparation skills inherent to a developmentally appropriate activity.

FITNESS BAG- prepare task cards and equipment in a”duffel” bag that a student may take home and practice skills with their parents/family. This will be very effective in the SUMMER vacation months to use as a carry over value .

SLIDESHOWS/SCRAPBOOK – use a digital camera and the ensuing software program to demonstrate the students in action in curricular activities. This can be used during demonstration /education week for PR. An example can be found at BITS and BYTES and click on TIPS and DRILLS from the main menu .
