 Tech Tips and Tricks
  • Make it a monthly duty to scan and defrag your computer
  • Make sure to use a virus scan and update the definitions
  • Delete temporary files and cookies to free up space
  • If your machine freezes, a simple ctrl, alt, delete will end that program that is causing the problem
  • It is good policy to pay extra money for a 3 year warranty protection on nay PC’s or notebooks
  • If your keyboard goes bad, choose start, programs, accessories, accessibility, on screen keyboard. Click ok to close dialog box, now you can roll the mouse over the onscreen keyboard and click to type the appropriate letters.

 Facilities and Equipment

Digital camera – there are many choices to chose from but, for example, the Sony Mavica can be used with a floppy disk for easy retrieval of pictures. Other cameras use a memory stick ( with a USB connection) to retrieve the photos .

Video camera – once again there are many choices to use in all kinds of formats with the MINI DV, a popular addition from the CANON Company. The small cassettes can be used to view the students in action with the software included with the camera.

Firewire cable – this device connects the camcorder to the laptop or desktop computers. It comes in 4 pin and 6 pin arrangements.

Firewire card – comes installed with many new computers. This is where the firewire cable will be inserted along with the camcorder. The insertion point can be found on the front of the computer and in the laptop, in the back.

EASY THUMBNAILS

- this program automatically changes images to thumbnails for easier production in webpages. Even though XP has a version that does the same task, easy thumbnails has settings to edit the image (brightness, saturation, resolution).

CAPTURE – this quick utility is used for taking screencaps at any resolution or color depth.

( click on Enter, copy that again, download/system, system utilities and capture to download)

Allows you to capture the entire screen, at any color depth and resolution, and save it into a Bitmap file for editing. If you are interested in only capturing one window, you can select to capture the active application window only, to save time editing screenshots! Capture runs on the Windows Tray (the lower right corner), and takes a screen capture every time you left click on the picture of a camera (please cut me some slack on the icon, I'm a musician, not an artist, and it was late), and a bitmap will be saved into the directory Capture is running from. You can take as many captures as you want, limited only by your imagination, and harddrive space. To exit Capture, just right click on it, and select 'Exit'; it's just that simple.

Another method to enhance the use of technology is through a free program from Microsoft, called Movie Maker 2. Here is a step by step process to make a slideshow or video presentation using digital images. This can be produced with a digital camera or camcorder. There is an easy to use template that guides you through the process. Most of the work will be in a point and click sequence but there are some key points to cover before all takes place for the final product .

First, the images must be stored in either My Documents, My Pictures or any designation where the pictures are easily obtained. Music backgrounds may be stored in MY Music folder for future use, too. The interface will show a timeline where the pictures will be dragged and dropped and placed for editing. This can be done by moving the mouse along the timeline and then releasing.

In the left pane will be a command that shows the Capture video, click import pictures and all your images will appear on the screen in an interface box. Take each picture and drag it to the timeline in the sequence you decide.

The next entry from the left pane with answer to the EDIT Movie command. From here there are uploaded video effects and transitions that will be placed in between each picture. This may include fade in and out or checkerboard, etc. An example is presented and then just click what is prescribed and it will be placed automatically. Also , there is a beginning and ending credits command to spice up the program. Click on either one and type in what is desired.

The import audio for background music is tricky but once its saved, only a click will place the music on the storyboard/ timeline. Here is an easier way to finish the movie with sound effects. First, there must be a site that can be used to obtain (free ) music and by downloading WINMIX, a file sharing program. In the search command choose any musical selection, that is, movie and TV themes. The program searches all files with that text and it downloads the music to the My Music folder. In the Movie Maker program from the left pane, chose import music and it will be placed in the box along with your pictures. Drag it to the audio timeline and the music will be stored. There is a video box that will appear on the right that displays your images for replay and to watch as it will be presented for others to view.

The last feature from the left pane is Finishing the Movie. From here, you can either save to the computer, CD( need a CD burner program ), e-mail or to the WEB.

Now, for the instance that you may want to use a camcorder, a firewire cable must be used to transfer the images. By choosing import video command maintains that the movies selected will be placed on the timeline/storyboard. This process will be discussed in the next issue. But, to save time, movie maker has a command called Auto Movie that can make the movie for you. This can be found on the left pane under Edit Movie.

Even though the images from the digital camera are STILL in nature, you can appear to make the move by choosing the appropriate video transitions.

Here are some examples to use with your classes:

*Slideshow depicting a skill sequence
*Parent – teacher conference to show what is learned in class
*Rules , sportsmanship, acceptable behavior timeline
*School facilities, equipment
*Homepages / presentations
