On
behalf of everyone at PELINKS4U I would like to extend our best
wishes for a healthy and happy 2005.
If you've been a reader for awhile, you'll
know that PELINKS4U is produced almost entirely through volunteer
efforts. Thanks to everyone (including the companies and organizations
whose logos appear on our pages) for your support, and a special
thanks to those of you who have contributed ideas and suggestions
for improving the quality of children's physical education. Now,
celebrating the start of our 6th year, I'm pleased to share a couple
of new PELINKS4U features:
NEW Professional Workshop & Conference Calendar
- PELINKS4U is now offering a professional workshop calendar to
which you can now add your own events. This calendar offers different
ways to view events, and you can even search for locations, individuals,
or dates.
Anyone who presents or
organizes events for professionals in physical and health education,
sports, nutrition, or related fields is invited to post upcoming
events on the PELINKS4U calendar. Use this link
to either view or post your events.
Additional links to the new calendar appear in the top, right of
each section page, and also at the bottom of the 'news' section
on this page.
NEW Discussion Forum - Coming February
PELINKS4U, NASPE, and Sportime will begin collaboration in February
on a new discussion forum called the NASPE-Forum. This forum will
be designed to compliment the existing NASPE-Talk listserv. It's
our hope that the NASPE-Forum will serve as a location for in-depth
discussions on professional issues, as well as an easy-to-search
informational resource.
A link to the NASPE-Forum will be posted on each section of PELINKS4U,
and the forum will be organized by topics so that readers can focus
on their areas of personal interest. Please be sure to check back
in February and help us make this new professional resource a great
success.
Best Wishes for 2005,
Steve Jefferies, PhD

This
month we feature a guest editorial by Michele Silence, a fitness
writer, lecturer, teacher, fitness studio owner, and creator of
KID-FIT physical education classes for preschoolers.
In December
2003, in an editorial entitled "Why Physical Education
is Failing to Promote Active and Healthy Lifestyles," we pointed
out that school physical education alone cannot hope to successfully
change children's activity and health habits. In this month's editorial
Michele explains what can be done during the pre-school years.
Welcome Michele!

Stephen C. Jefferies is Coaching section editor for
January. Dr. Jefferies returns our focus to the purpose of interscholastic
athletic programs, and believes we need to think more about why students
choose to participate in athletics..

"If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think that you dare not, you don't,
If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,
It's almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you've lost,
For out in the world you'll find,
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can."
- Walter D. Wintle
