"Light tomorrow with today."
--Elizabeth Barrett Browning
What inspirational Olympic Games we have witnessed! The dream
for the pursuit of excellence and a global community was strongly
felt. The new President of the IOC, Jaccques Rogge, shared some
very meaningful words with the world during the Opening Ceremony.
He spoke of the athletes who "because you have dreamed, you
have paid the price to make those dreams real"; that they were
there, standing on the shoulders of those who lifted them as they
pursued their dreams. Yet the quotation that struck me most, since
it is a message which I can share with my pupils is that "A
champion is more than a winner: A champion is someone who respects
the rules, rejects doping and competes in the spirit of Fair Play".
As physical education teachers, how are our programs championing
our students? Providing for this, has to start early - right from
the elementary level, as it is at this age that attitudes begin
to gel and form. The goal of our programs is not to develop the
athletes of the future Olympic Games. But one of our goals CAN be
to help children develop their unique potential through quality
and developmentally appropriate physical education programs.
In keeping with the Salt Lake 2002 slogan, we might be able to
help "light the fire within" our young pupils.
We continue to look forward to receiving your feedback and invite
you to take on an active role by also contributing your ideas.

Pollution Linked to Asthma: Some Children Playing Outside Have More
Breathing Problems
The need to encourage children to be physically active, after school
hours within their local community is also recommended. But is it
always a healthy endeavor? A recent article on WebMD indicates that, "kids who play outdoor sports in cities with high levels
of pollution are more than three times as likely to develop asthma".
Where, in terms of physical location, we can direct children to
be physically active after school hours, seems is also an important
consideration to keep in mind. You can read the entire article here

Assessment in PE: Cooperation
Building
|
Last November, the elementary page comprised a section
on Portfolio
task sheets in Physical Education. A sample task sheet focusing
on the development of social
skills was presented. Since then, the sample has evolved! Physical Education teacher Kathy Duhaime
from Riddle Brook School (K-5) in Bedford, New Hampshire has
developed further the task sheet for use with different grades.
She also roped in the art teacher at her school, Ms. Ruth Bowler
to develop the handout.
By clicking on the following links, you can see how she has developed and used the sheets.

Thanks Kathy for sharing :-)
