And there will be more time
to move . . .
This week my son enjoyed the celebration of his second year with
us. As is sometimes the case with birthdays, his parents took
a chance. Instead of buying him toy cars, little animal toys
or a variety of other motorized potential playthings he received
a 'blue light special' bike. His addiction to bikes may have
only been related to the fact that there are so many bikes in the
house and garage that he can't turn around without seeing one or
maybe it simply related to his inherent need and desire to move.
The bike was a hit, so much so, that this weekend saw us having
to bring him inside, crying as only a two year old can, after hours
of riding up and down the sidewalk and driveway. His
energy to move exceeds his dad's. What is it that makes kids
love to move and play so much? What an exciting profession
that we work in . . . one in which we simply get to fan that inherent
flame, that is a desire to be physically active.
Fortunately, Texas children will become the beneficiaries of increased
physical activity time, thanks to the efforts of many parents, teachers
and health care professionals. So, kids throughout Texas who
need and want to move, will receive additional movement time during
the school day. Congratulations to all of the people
who contributed to this monumental and historical event!
For those of you who will be attending the national AAHPERD conference
to learn more information and activities that will support your
efforts in physically educating our children, please visit and support
our sponsors. Check out the special AAHPERD convention section
on this page, to find the list of sponsors who will be attending
the conference along with their booth numbers.

Of all the lessons we must learn, few are more important
than those we learn from exercise and sport. They teach us to
perfect and protect our health; to respect our own capabilities and
those of others; and to accept excellence as our standard of performance.
