My goal this year was to integrate physical education with a fifth grade science teacher. I did an obstacle course with the circulation of the body, specifically the heart, did some activities involving bones, breathing, cells, magnets, whales, senses, waves, and just recently did an obstacle course attempting to review the scientific method. The fifth graders are having a science fair where they have to conduct an experiment using a hypothesis, make observations, use data, a graph, and come up with a conclusion.
I had them make a hypothesis of whether an obstacle course should be all passive, active or a mixture of both activities. Each station had both active and passive instructions and with a partner they had to go through the course one time being active and the other being passive the entire time.
They had to give their observations after each station and the following period they changed their way of going through the course. At the end of the second period they had to graph their observations and write their conclusions.
I have attach the form that I gave each child. Click here to see it.
