In this edition of the Technology and Physical Education I
would like to
discuss, "What to do to make sure you use technology
productively this year?"
Send me information, questions or
problems you are having with with technology and as always I will try to help
you find answers.
I hope you have had a good summer, a chance to rest, a chance to play, and
a chance to grow professionally. My wife and I took her 89
year old mother to Norway to see the first great grandchild this
summer and we traveled to the North
Cape of Norway. I hope you got a chance to travel and
relax
Professionally I attended an "Intel Teach
to the Future" workshop and am
revising some courses to incorporate more technology and a slightly different
approach to technology for my students.
What are something's to get done as the year starts? Check
your state associations
webpage to find out what is happening in your state, when is
your convention, is there still time to develop a presentation.
Your state association is a great source of support. You may
be able to find links to your state standards and make sure your
curriculum is aligned with state standards. Start using a
grade book program or develop a newsletter or webpage (microsoft.com/
) for templates that can be used to get started. Look for
new teaching ideas on the web at sites such as pelinks4u.org, pecentral.org,
pe-talk.org, Kathie
Nunley's Layered Curriculum (tm) Site for Educators. Gather
information on obesity or other issues related to the need for quality
Physical Education from CDC (cdc.gov) or AAHPERD
Look over you
states technology standards and see how your program could support these
requirements.
Look at
getting pedometers and/or heart rate monitors for your
students. These items
can help motivate your students.
Finally you may want to incorporate technology into your classroom. The
National Educational Technology
Standards Project can help you find some lessons, although none
are currently listed in Health or Physical Education there are other
subject areas that might serve as a starting point for ideas.
You could have your students use digital
cameras to
take pictures of the key cues you use in teaching and place these on a
bulletin board. Have student use Excel to graph their changing fitness scores or to
compare a groups average scores to another groups scores.
Could your students create a game and then have them write it
up for the
class? How about having a class newsletter
for each class
written about what they are learning? If
you are using the
Sports Education Model each teams publicist could submit articles about
performance.
Also check out the I
Life lessons from apple to see how some teachers have used movies
and pictures in lessons.
What other ways might your students use technology? They can track their
favorite team on the web and keep statistics. They could go to a
website such as Real
Age and monitor their fitness; body mass index; log their workouts;
develop a fitness program; compare their skill performance to a
check sheet you post on your web page. You might work with your
recreation department to come up with a fitness activity that you
could advertise on the schools web site.
Sincerely,
Michael Dumin,
