 Editorial

Hi all !
Love is still in air even though Valentine's day if over. "Love makes the world go round" comes to mind as I try to think how the spirit of the Olympics can help to bring about friendship and peace across so many nations. Especially in these times, this notion becomes even more poignant. How can we physical educators contribute to promote PEACE in our programs? This issue's aim is to share some Peace and Olympic Education ideas.

We continue to look forward to receiving your feedback and invite you to take on an active role by also contributing your ideas.

Field Day Idea and Peace Education Sites

There is no way to Peace.
Peace is THE way.

Mahatma Ghandi

The sites I'd like to share in this section relate to PEACE Education.
Physical Education holds just so much potential for fostering friendships, tolerance, respect for diversity.

As I shared in a previous issue, I have used the letters in PEACE as an acronym for "Physical Education Among Children Everywhere". This became my Field Day theme called "Peacelympics 2001". I have now included a description to the stations in response to the several readers that wrote in. You can access them at the above link.

Adapting the Junior Olympic Oath, to "We are a PE ace !", the words became :-

We are a PE Ace!

As a PE-Ace,
We promise to do our best in everything we do -
today on this special day, and all other days !

We promise to play with enthusiasm, fairplay and team spirit.
We promise to look after and respect our team mates as well as all others !

We promise to take part in a way that also is respectful of others and also of the world around us !

We promise to look after this wonderful world in which we live even when we play our games.

We are all one big family on this globe which we call the world,
And being a PE-Ace we know we CAN make a difference to bring PEACE in the world

Cyberschool Bus have a whole section dedicated to PEACE EDUCATION
which can be used for elementary. You can be inspired to develop your own teaching ideas on how to integrate it within your Physical Education Program.

The Goals of Olympism and Olympic Education go beyond the staging of the Winter or Summer Olympic Games. Olympism is a philosophy, a way of life that exhaults humanistic ideologies that aim to develop a peaceful world.

The goal of Olympism is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world
by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination
of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding
with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.
