- Improving Professional Connections
|
PELINKS4U is now emailing it's biweekly PE-News
to more than 3500 addresses. We believe that by exposing PE teachers
to new, different, and innovative ideas, we can improve the quality
of children's physical education. To achieve this lofty goal we need
to connect with more PE teachers, coaches, and others in the health
and fitness areas currently unaware of the information available on
this site. YOU can help to get the profession connected by sharing
the information from PELINKS4U with teaching or coaching colleagues
and students in schools and universities worldwide. Encourage
them to visit PELINKS4U and sign up for the biweekly PE-News emailings.
In the USA alone there are more than 60,000 PE teachers. Help us to
make this valuable professional connection!

MA, plans his "Family and Physical Education Night" to promote family
fitness and PE in his school.
Valley

Who Said This?
"Many teachers seem to have the
mental constitution to enjoy watching rows of mechanically
arranged children executing their mechanical movements
to command or in rhythm...While this coordinated movement
is attractive to the spectator, what relationship does
it have to the child's life or education?"
(First person to guess correctly wins one of our newly
created PELINKS4U T-shirt! E-mail
us your best guess)

Are
You With-it?
Do
your students think you have "eyes behind your head?" Can you deal effectively
with several students at the same time? How well do you maintain lesson
momentum to keep students busy? According to Deb
Wuest you may be using many of the techniques
incorporated by Kounin into his discipline model.
S'no
Exercise Like Snowshoeing!
Now that winter has arrived in WA State,
those of us too poor (or cheap) to purchase a lift ticket take out our
snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a great and inexpensive aerobic activity
and could be a new way to challenge your students. Here's how to start
out right.
Medieval
Games
Hopscotch, marbles, boules, bocce...Looking for something
different in the Medieval games line? Here's a site with a bunch
of them brought to you courtesy of Berni Fitzpatrick.
Running
Site for Kids
Joanie Lepage encourages you to
check out "WayCoolRunning" a web site for kids, about
kids, and by kids who are interested in running and exercise.
Obesity
Affects Kids' Self-Esteem
At ages 9 and 10, children who are obese by federal guidelines have
self-images that are just as good as the normal-weight kids. Obesity
begins to impair children's self-esteem after fifth grade, and by eighth
grade, heavier kids feel much lower self-worth than classmates, according
to a recent study.
Injury
Prevention
The SportSmart programme (from New
Zealand, hence the spelling!), consists of a 10-point plan to help
minimize the risk of injury in sport, and is specifically aimed at
teachers, coaches and participants in sports.
Health
Jeopardy
Take this online health test using the
popular jeopardy format. Even better, this site provides a template
you can download
and create your own "jeopardy" style tests and presentations.
Public Health Efforts Failing?
Despite knowing more about the health
benefits of regular exercise, 60% of Americans remain
inactive. The goal of the federal government's "Healthy
People 2000" campaign was for no more than 15% of
all Americans age 6 or older to lead sedentary lives by
the year 2000.

Here are some ideas on how to make your playground
more accessible in compliance with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities

disabilities.
Dressing himself
a three-year-old put his shoes on by himself. His mother
noticed that the left shoe was on the right foot. She
said, "Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet." He looked
up at her with a raised brow and said, "Don't kid me,
Mom. They're the only feet I got!."
