"Missouri AHPERD Report"
(By Daria Winker, Wilkinson ECC, St. Louis, MO )

MAHPERD Convention, Lake Ozark, MO, November 12-14, 1999

We had a beautiful weekend in a beautiful setting for the MAHPERD Convention. It was a compliment to the presenters and to all the professionals that kept the seats full for all the sessions all weekend.

The first session was an update on the Missouri Assessment Program. We are in the process of preparing for our first ever statewide HPE assessment. It's good to be recognized as a core subject but getting up to speed with curriculum and assessment is stressful. The idea of tuning up our assessment and curriculum to meet state standards seemed to be an underlying theme throughout the weekend.

A highlight for me was listening to Mike Cosgrove, National Elementary Teacher of the Year. He had two participatory sessions, one on using "sportfolios" and the other on tying activities at each grade level to the NASPE standards. He is really good at bringing assessment, current research, and fun activities together for his lessons.

There were several other elementary sessions that presented specific activities that incorporated fitness and integrating health concepts.
Russell Pate gave the keynote address on "Community Health." Besides the grade level sessions, there were also several sessions on technology which seemed to be well attended.

I learned how to do a gradebook in Excel and wanted to learn about websites, but had to chose between that and recertifying in CPR.

State awards were given out at the Saturday evening banquet. There were several other social activities such as the Fitness Fun Night and Scavenger/Fitness Run.

In summary, a lot of great ideas were shared. As at most conventions, it was hard to decide which session to go to. In the future, I need to find some friends with different interests who are going to the other sessions and exchange notes when the convention is over.
