I am a junior in college and will be going into the schools to teach physical education fairly soon. Sometimes my friends joke around with me because I appear to be younger than I am and I have a very skinny frame. For all other purposes, this is not a problem. However, I am slightly concerned about becoming an athoratative figure for students when it looks like I am one of them. Is this going to be an issue? Will students have a hard time taking instructions from someone much smaller than many of them, or am I getting worried about nothing? Any input or personal experience would be great! |

I am 4'10" and was 86 lbs when I started teaching PE in a high school. I probably looked 12 yrs old. I did not have a problem, except with the hall monitors. Once you earn their respect, you definitely will not have an authority problem. Be well prepared to present your lessons. If your content is good, your size won't matter. Having a healthy sense of humor always helps too. |
