In high school, I was fortunate to be selected as the female representative for my school at a Women In Sports banquet held in New Jersey, and it meant a lot to me. It is nice to be noticed for my hard work as an athlete. Also, at Slippery Rock, we host a Girls and Women in Sports Day, which i think is very important to help young girls find a place in sports. I think this is so important because sports have been almost a way to define me. They are who I am. One of the first thing people notice about me is that I am an athlete, and those characteristics I have gained as an athlete have made me the person I am today. |

As an aging athlete I can say that sports can define you but I think too many boys/men try too hard to define themselves by their athletic accomplishments. An old Springsteen song called Glory Days is still true. I think sports can help our girls and boys do positive things with their lives and bodies. Much better than "hanging out" or playing video games. I think we lose too many kids in the middle school years, especially in Fla, where they need more structured sports and coaching. I applaud you for being an athlete and attending Slippery Rock. Isn't it supposed to be the best PE college? I love sports and games and competition but we have to keep them in perspective because many kids obsess about winning and losing. By competing and getting fit we all win. Thanks for posting. |
