information about children's safety issues. If you are looking for statistics
here's the place to start!
Kid

The
Olympics and Olympism |
PELINKS4U brings you more sites and information
to share with your students about the Olympics.
OIympic History
The first Olympic
Games were held in 776 BC. They began as a religious festival,
were held every four years and continued for a thousand years.
They were held in a sacred, fertile valley of Ancient Greece at
a place called Olympia.
Olympic
Highlights
The IOC has a site that brings you weekly
highlights of Olympic events around the world.
Humanitarian
Olympics
Can sport become a means for positive change? In most humanitarian
situations children have no structured, supervised activities
in which to take part, and no outlet to take their minds off
their problems. Sport helps to overcome idleness and boredom,
and to build friendships, tolerance and understanding: universal
values which form the core of Olympism as it is defined in the
Olympic Charter.
Did you know that almost every
state has a State Olympic Committee and many have
an Olympic Alumni group? The
USOC can get you in contact with them. The Athletes,
especially, are usually very willing to come to
talk to students about their experiences

Long Distance - Free!
John Williams reports
that he loaded the software, filled out the required information and
was up and running in less than five minutes. "Good connections
and clear for awhile and then there was an echo and sometimes it broke
up...seems to work better if the other person is not on a walkabout
phone...It's sort of like talking on an old cell phone or walkie talkie...I
talked for about 35 minutes and it didn't cost me anything! All in
all it's a trip and I wouldn't recommend making any serious business
calls or anything, but if you know someone and they understand some
of the problems associated with it, hey go for it."

Wall of Fame/Wall of Shame
Are athletes
role models? People on both sides make compelling arguments.
Tom Winiecki explains that
his "Wall of Fame/Wall of Shame" is a collection
of newspaper and magazine articles that he and his students
find.
Teaching
Kids to be Good Sports
Is sportsmanship
becoming a lost art? Unless we remind ourselves of the
essentials of sportsmanship and strive to maintain the
basics of sportsmanship will it gradually fade as other
values have done in our society. Read Darrell
Burnett's tips for teaching sportsmanship.
"Sportsmanship is the ability to: win
without gloating, lose without complaining,
and treat your opponent with respect."
(Darrell
Burnett)
