Teen Pregnancy: My school district has a big problem with teen pregnancy. Each year there are between 5-10 girls who get pregnant. Some keep the babies and some get abortions. We have had students that have already had 3-4 abortions. We go over sexual education and in great detail. However the trend continues. What ideas do you have that we may be able to implement to our students to stop the cycle? Please share in the forum.
Nutrition: At Slippery Rock University we have no classes on nutrition as a Health and Physical Education major. We only have three health classes that make us certified to teach a health class. The other day one of our professors was talking about the obesity rates in America and how as physical educators we are obligated to be a big part of fighting childhood obesity. So, I asked, "How are we supposed to fight obesity when we are only teaching things like life time sports. Isn't nutrition and what people eat what makes them obese? Why don't we have nutrition classes?" She had no answer and told me to ask the chair-person of the department. How can a university preach that we are to educate children and fight obesity, when we have no knowledge or certification to talk about the food that you put into your body, which makes you obese? Healthy Teachers: Does a health & physical education teacher have the responsibility to live out a healthy, physically active lifestyle? How does an overweight physical education teacher affect the perception of his/her students? Please share in the forum.
Presidential Physical Fitness: I am trying to record student's scores that they receive on the physical fitness tests. The President's Challenge has a Fit File but it is not compatable with an ipad. Does anyone have a way/program in which you input the data into an ipad and have it record as National or Presidential, based on the student's age? Been working on this for a while and any help would be great! Please share in the forum.
Microsoft Xbox Kinect in Physical Education: With this latest technology? Do you think that it could be used somehow is a physical education class? It is much more advanced than DDR or the Wii system so compare with one, or say if you think it could help in PE. Please share in the forum.
Is Technology Good?: Should advanced technology be used in teaching physical education? Heart rate monitors and other devices like them are fine but consoles, like the wii, Xbox, can have hidden problems. Yes it is a good way to get students involved and a way to get them to like physical education because kids love video games. However is it the right way? I will admit some wii games really get me moving if I play them, but having a healthy mentality is just as important as having a healthy body when teaching physical education. Most kids will play video games alone at home with no social interactivity with others and that's not healthy. So should we use this form of technology to motivate students when it comes to teaching?
