COACHING STYLES : Here is an example of a student presentation on the topic of “Coaching Styles.” It employs the presentation method known as “pecha kucha” which involves 20 slides with 20 seconds set automatically to advance each slide. Find out more in the forum.
PLAYING TIME : Should everyone on a high school team get playing time no matter their athletic talent? Please share in the forum.
LESSON PLANS : So I know that yes, it is required of us in college to learn how to write these long lesson plans. But they seem extremely unnecessary. Ten pages, what principal wants to read all of that. What are lesson plans like in phys ed when you are actually a teacher? I feel like it is a waist of time and will just get in the way of a good teaching. Please share in the forum.
BRAIN BREAKS : The human brain has on average a ten minute attention span. With classes ranging from 35-50 minutes per class, a lot of time is spent teaching but not remembering. Brain breaks are becoming more and more popular among teachers no matter what the subject may be. If anyone has any good brain breaks that they use or have heard about please feel free share them! By promoting PA in other subjects we are promoting everything that P.E. stands for. Please share in the forum.
REFUSAL TO PARTICIPATE: I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or strategies in dealing with students who refuse to participate in P.E. even after you have sent them to the office or called home. Any thoughts? Please share in the forum.
ASSIGNMENTS : As everyone knows, our world is constantly changing. Education is one aspect that is facing a lot of changes, and Physical Educators need to keep up with the changes. In order to remain an important part of education Physical educators need to prove why Phys. ed is important and show that it is actually good for the students. Saying this, do you think physical education teachers should be giving their students homework assignments? Should they be doing more in class written work sheets? With new technology emerging, there are many options for assignments related to health and physical education. Does Phys. Ed need to go along with the emerging technology and use it in order to prove the program to be just as important as the core classes? Please share in the forum.
84 MINUTES: My junior high/high school physical education classes were for a whole 84 minutes. My teachers had it set up that the first "period", 42 minutes, was strictly conditioning. Our class would run around the gym to music for 10-20 minutes, do a series of wall sits, lunges, sit-ups, and push ups. The next 42 minutes of class wass when we were introduced to the game or unit for the week, or upcoming weeks. On Friday's we had "Fitness Fridays" where the entire period was dedicated to fitness based activities. We used BOSU balls, the weight room, and medicine balls. I feel this was a GREAT way to run a physical education class. Not only are you sticking with the traditional PE that's sports based, but you're tying in new PE that's fitness based. When I am hired at a school, how can I get my physical education classes to be run like this? How do I propose this idea to the school board and district? Please share in the forum.
