SPIRIT STICKS To motivate team spirit and good sportsmanship every time a field day team exhibits these characteristics a teacher or volunteer should give the team a "spirit stick" (popsicle stick). This gives the students something tangible instead of a "good work" or "good job." At the end of field day the spirit sticks would get counted up, and which ever team gets the most spirit sticks would be announced and receive some type of reward. For example, best spirit t-shirts.   PUNT, PASS, AND KICK Punt, Pass, & Kick is always a fun way to test strength, but there are fun ways to modify it! Divide up the students into different sections by choice of objects thrown, passeds or kicked. This way everyone can choose an object that they feel comfortable with. After the students use their choice of equipment, have them go and test their skills with other equipment. This way they don't feel discouraged competing against the students who play football, baseball, or soccer. Some of the objects you can use are soccer balls, baseballs, basketballs, footballs, frisbees, tennis balls, lacrosse balls, golf balls, dodge balls etc... You can also have two hand throws or passes with some objects, and with objects like the frisbee you can also change the types of throws, like a back hand throw, a forehand throw, or even a hammer throw. This way you can have more sections for the students to compete in. There are many different sections that you could create, and this way everyone will be able to try a different object, or different type of throw, without feeling like they have no chance with one object. This will hopefully raise the student’s confidence levels, and will give everyone a chance to have fun with different objects, and to tryout some new types of throws. Please share in the forum.
RECYCLING PROGRAM I have been approved for a recycling program at my middle school. I am using my tier time kids (a select number of students in my class for 30 minutes who are not graded for what they do. it is used to enhance learning in language arts, math, etc.) to collect the recycleables and place them in the bin in the parking lot. I was wondering if anyone has a similar program, and what you use for collection bins in the classrooms and cafeteria? We do not have a recycling company that provides the fancy bins with the recycling symbol on the side. Thanks! Please share in the forum.
TEACHING HEALTH Since health is the bigger weakness out of the health and physical education major, how do could you make yourself stronger in the classroom teaching health because I believe we are not taught enough health throughout college? Please share in the forum.
DRUNKOREXIA: Recently I have heard a lot of discussion about new forms of anorexia. Specifically "Drunkorexia." Drunkorexia describes someone who does not eat for an entire day when they know that night they are going out drinking. This is done to prevent consuming too many calories from food and alcohol that day, and to be able to consume more alcohol. This form of anorexia is seen mostly in college females. What do you think about this form of anorexia? Do you believe it is a mental disorder or simply a fad? What are your thoughts on prevention of this disease amoung college females?   DODGEBALL IN PE: I know a lot of people and professors at my school say that "if you play dodgeball in PE, you should go up on the wall of shame." Personally I think dodgeball is one of the better activities you can do in PE, but I also understand that it can single out students. Maybe not the traditional game of dodgeball, but maybe some different versions. Is dodgeball in Physical Education really that harmful to students in an emotional sense? Please share in the forum.
COMMUNITY & PARENT INVOLVEMENT: One strong way to advocate for PE is to get parents and the community involved in physical activity outside of school. One idea is to create a "PE Olympics." The Olympics would consist of activities that children could do outside of class with a parent. For example walking at the park, playing basketball, swimming, bowling, bike riding, or ice skating. (This list can go on and on!) To get credit for these tasks, the students would have to take a picture with a parent/guardian doing that specific activity. Now to get the community involved the tasks like, bowling or ice skating, students would get extra points for taking a picture with the manager of that specific business. This way when the manager asks the student why they want a picture it automatically starts a conversation about PE. This may spark the interest of the business to get more involved in the project. Students would get extra points for completing this extra task. These points earned for each activity completed would go to some type of reward, for example a "PE Olympic" t-shirt. The pictures taken would also go up on a wall in the school to motivate more student to participate. Please share in the forum.
