PHYSICAL EDUCATION SEEN AS JOKE: I am tired of telling people that I am a Physical Education and Health major and hearing their negative comments. They think that I am majoring in Physical Education because it is "easy." When in actuality it is a very demanding major. I take pride in what I have accomplished so far in the major, and what I am planning on for the future. If there is anyone else who deals with (or has dealt with) these same problems, how do you approach/handle it? I want to prove to people that Physical Education is extremly essential and one of the best classes every student will take. Please share in the forum. |
COACHES OVER PHYSICAL EDUCATORS: Some school districts in the Pittsburgh area are now coming up with new ideas to get students to become more active. A high school I know allows their student-athletes the choice of taking Physical Education class. Those who are not athletes at the high school are required to take Physical Education. So, many of those who were not athletes would try to join a sport so that they would not have to take Physical Education during their school day. I think the idea is great in the best interest of their high school athletics but they are screwing over Physical Education teachers. My school district is planning on doing this with our high school kids and the idea might be spreading to your district. What do you have to say about that? Basically, they are going to use less Physical Education teachers and hire more coaches. Please share in the forum. |
CAPTAINS: Can a team have too many captains? I know as a senior in high school my soccer team had 5 captains including myself. I felt as if some of the roles a captain plays was taken away from some of us because there were so many. It also seemed like some of the team wouldnt take us seriously because they thought the number of captains was a joke. What are some ideas on the number of captains a team should have? As a high school coach in my future, I will have to face this decision, and would like some input on this issue. Please share in the forum. |
FITNESS LABS:At my school I am a mobile PE teacher. Meaning that I do not have space to call my own. The other PE teacher has the gym. Not our choice. Admins choice. Anyways we came up with the idea of starting a fitness lab and have been bouncing around ideas. Does anyone use this idea in an elementary setting? Have heard of it mostly being used in Jr, middle and high school levels. Any idea would be great. Please share in the forum. |
TATTLING: Hey Everybody!! I need help with a classroom management question. I am new to the Elementary scene. I have taught middle school and high school for the past 5 years, and what works for them doesn't work for k-3rd grades. I noticed a lot of tattling among the younger kids. How do I get this to stop? Also how should I deal with it? I want to teach my students, not listen to a bunch of kids complain about someone running into them. Help! Please share in the forum. |
MOTIVATING THE UNMOTIVATED: When I was in High School it was mandatory that each student run/walk a mile within a certain amount of time. The majority of the students were able to, but yet there were a selected few that were extremely unmotivated and preferred the failing grade for that part of the class instead of pushing themselves to achieve that goal. As a future educator, what are some good ways I can help to motivate those selected few to push themselves? Also, what consequences should there be if the student bluntly doesn't try, but argues that they are doing their best? Please share in the forum. |
SCHOOL LUNCHES: Since there are so many overweight kids in our schools how can a physical education teacher work with other classroom teachers and administration to get nutrional snacks and lunches? PE teachers only have the students for an hour every week.. so how can they get everyone else involved? Please share in the forum. |
