NUTRITION At Slippery Rock University we have no classes on nutrition as a Health and Physical Education major. We only have three health classes that make us certified to teach a health class. The other day one of our professors was talking about the obesity rates in America, and how as physical educators we are obligated to be a big part of fighting childhood obesity. So, I asked, "How are we supposed to fight obesity when we are only teaching things like life time sports. Isn't nutrition and what people eat what makes them obese? Why don't we have nutrition classes?" She had no answer, and told me to ask the chair-person of the department. How can a university preach that we are to educate children and fight obesity, when we have no knowledge or certification to talk about the food that you put into your body, which makes you obese?   INDOOR FITNESS: I am a student teacher and need to teach fitness two days a week. I love fitness, but the only problem is the weather is ruining my plans. Does anyone have suggestions or games that are fun for fitness indoors. I am teaching at a high school that is adequate facilities. Thank you Please share in the forum.
CHALLENGING FITNESS: What are some fitness activities that can be done outside for high school students that will challenge the students. This can be done with a track/soccer field/bleachers. Please share in the forum.
PUSHING TO TEACH HEALTH IN PE: When I was in high school, I could not stand the Health aspect of the so called 'gym class.' My peers and I did not care to learn about anything related to Health; it simply was not interesting. We were more excited about being active then sitting in a class room. I feel this is still how kids are today. They do not take the time to understand what is a healthy lifestyle.

What are the best ways to get across to high school students the importance of health? Reading out of a book never seems to work. Are there more fun, active ways to teach health so students will want to learn about healthy lifestyles? Can we incorporate cognitive thinking with psychomotor activity to help teach health?   HEALTHY TEACHERS: Does a health & physical education teacher have the responsibility to live out a healthy, physically active lifestyle? How does an overweight physical education teacher affect the perception of his/her students? Please share in the forum.
PROMOTE HEALTH THROUGH THE TEACHERS?: I feel that one of the biggest concerns of child obesity is the fact that they have no good role models to look up to in that area. Many teachers are very lazy and show poor habits to their students. As teachers, we need to advocate an overall healthy lifestyle for the benefit of ourselves and most importantly, our students. If we want the "New PE" to actually become a true reality, we must get the ball rolling on our own individual lifestyle habits. Please share in the forum.
LIFESTYLE FITNESS VS SPORT BASED: I have always felt that lifestyle activities were more important that skill based activities and competitions. What should one focus on when teaching physical education? What outcome is the best for students? Should we focus on helping to develop effective sport based students or let students develop a lifestyle activity early? Please share in the forum.
TEACHER PARTICIPATION IN CLASS?: When I was in school, especially high school, our teachers would usually participate when we were playing sports. They usually chose to skip the fitness testing unit but other than that they always did what the students were doing. I had planned on participating in classes when I became a teacher. I think it helps to push the students to work when they have a chance to play with or against the teacher, but I keep hearing more and more that this is not appropriate. Can anyone tell me if teacher participation is ok? Please share in the forum.
