HOLDING STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE:Other than using heart rate monitors how can I hold my students accountable? I don’t think pedometers are an accurate way to judge the students activity level, and would like to know some other ways to hold them accountable in class? Please share in the forum.
TEACHERS & TATTOOS: When you go into any interview, a question someone might ask is, "do you have any tattoos?" My answer would be yes, and I am proud of the ink I have on my body. My grandparents names are on both of my wrists, and I never thought twice about getting them because they are meaningful to me, but why should these tattoos that have meaning to me be looked down upon when applying for a teaching job? In my mind, if a tattoo is not offensive in any way it shouldn't matter if you have them or not. What do you think about the subject of teachers having tattoos? Please share in the forum.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION BLOG: There is a new physical education blog that started around the beginning of 2009. It has lesson ideas, fitness concepts, book & product reviews and much-much more. New content is added every week. www.fitmet.com
NEWSLETTERS TO PARENTS: So I was reading somewhere that a lot of schools have been sending newsletters to parents regarding the status of their children in their physical education classes. My question is, is it a good idea to send out such letters and should they be addressed individually or as a whole class? I don't see it as a bad idea but I also don't know how many parents respond to that. Just want to get other people's opinions on what they think or to see if anyone that is teaching now sends out newsletters. Please share in the forum.
BASEBALL COACHING: I am coaching a Sophomore baseball team and some of the players are frustrated that a Freshman is starting at catcher. What sort of comments can I make to help the Sophomores realize he is a teammate and should be treated equally? Please share in the forum.
DIVERSE STUDENTS: Say there is a student in your class that does not like gym class in general. Everyday he/she comes in and tells you they are not going to participate in gym class, how do you approach the student in a manner that is not negative and tell them they must participate to get the credit for that day? Also, how do you deal with the students that just stand around and say they have a medical problem, but will not present a doctors excuse? Please share in the forum.
MAINSTREAMING: I will be student teaching in April at an Elementary School that has quite a few mainstreamed children with various types of disabilities. I'm a little nervous about it because there are as many as 10 disabled children in the class. I know that there are supposed to be aids with all the children, but how should I handle a class with that many children with special needs along with the other students? Please share in the forum.
SLIDING DISCS VS PAPER PLATES: I have a silly question that I was wondering if anybody had an answer to. I have taught fitness using the gliding disks at a gym and it is a great workout. Since the money is not in the budget to purchase disks for all students I have been told to use paper plates instead. Has anybody ever tried this? Do the kids actually go for it or do they think it's silly? Please share in the forum.
