ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Hello, my name is Gina and I am currently a Health and Physical Education major with a minor in Adapted Physical Activity at Slippery Rock University. Upon graduating and getting a job I was hoping to be able to either start my own or add to the Adapted Education program by providing some classes for all students. I want to educate everyone not only those with physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities but also able bodied students, while providing a chance to participate in adapted sports. My question is whether or not to make the classes available for all students as part of a PE curriculum or to cut out the extra classes and just include them in the regular PE schedule? Please share in the forum.
COACHING & SPORT: Coaching and Physical Education are two activities that go hand in hand. If an individual is a successful and joyous teacher, they also have the potential to coach students through the same technique. What factors differ coaching a team from coaching a class? What are the differences in the body of students during a PE class and a body of players on an athletic team? Why must a teacher alter their attitude and practices when changing environments with these two jobs? Please share in the forum.
GENERAL: Most PE teachers that I know require that students change before class, some even use it as an attendance policy. Now while I do feel it is best that students dress in comfortable cloths in order to better participate, I don't think students should be penalized for not wearing gym cloths. As long as it is not a safety hazard I think that students should be able to wear what they want. As long as they are comfortable and it doesn't take away from them being physically active then it shouldn't be an issue. I would like to know where people stand on this issue. Please share.
ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Recently I have observed a 3rd and 4th grade physical education class. Throughout the class there were a few misbehaving children. The teacher put them in "time out" in the corner where they sat down and did no activity. The children were practicing soccer passes with a partner, but when the misbehaving partner was sent to time out, that "well behaved" child did not have anyone to practice with. How would you correct a child who is misbehaving with out taking away their physical education (active) time? Please share in the forum.
HEALTH: I was just wondering what other health teachers are doing about fad diets in health classes. I personally don't believe in them, but is it right for me to let that interfere with my education. When I say fad diets I really mean the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and any other of these "new" diets that are just coming on to the market. I personally believe in a well balanced diet. However, I'm not sure whether it is fair of me to provide a biased approach to teaching nutrition. Please share in the forum.
SECONDARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION: What is sportsmanship to you? Do you actively teach sportsmanship to your students? How? Is it part of the grade? Please share on this topic. Please share in the forum.
TECHNOLOGY IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Does anyone think that with how fast technology is growing that PE teachers will no longer be needed to teach class because of simulated activites such as virtually playing a sport or teaching it. Please share in the forum.
INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION: What are some of your methods for making physical education cross-curricular, incorporating PE with subjects such as English, Math, Spelling, etc., in your classroom? Please share with others how you combine these topics. Please share in the forum.
