451 When+I+hear+the+term+%26quot%3bRole+Model%26quot%3b+the+first+thing+that+comes+to+my+mind+is+the+famous+Charles+Barkley+quote+%26quot%3bI+am+not+a+role+model%26quot%3b%2e++I+always+thought+this+was+a+humorous+statment%2c+because+we+don%27t+choose+to+be+role+models%2c+it+is+something+that+just+happends%2e++No+matter+who+you+are+or+what+your+job%2c+somebody+is+watching+your+actions+and+the+choices+that+you+make%2e++%0a+%0a++This+responsiblity+to+be+a+role+model+is+taken+to+a+whole+new+level+when+applying+it+the+proffession+of+a+health+teacher%2e++As+Pollock+and+Middleton+stated+%26quot%3byoungsters+tend+to+love%2c+admire%2c+and+emulate+their+teachers%26quot%3b%2e++They+go+on+to+say+%26quot%3ba+teacher%27s+personal+health+behavior+can+enhance+or+counteract+the+messsage+intend+by+teaching%2e%26quot%3b++I+could+not+agree+more%2c+just+think+the+picture+it+would+paint+if+a+health+teacher+is+stressing+to+his+students+the+importance+of+a+balanced+diet+while+wiping+the+crumbs+of+a+Krispy+Kreme+off+of+his+face%2e%0a%0a++Some+my+argue+the+article+is+holding+health+teachers+to+a+higher+standard%2e++Granted+the+english+teacher+has+to+make+sure+that+she+uses+good+gramer%2c+and+the+Math+teacher+should+portray+profeciency+in+his+multiplication+facts%2c+but+the+role+of+a+health+teacher+takes+this+topic+to+the+next+level%2e++Health+teachers+are+dealing+with+topics+of+life+and+death+%28literally%29%2c+so+holding+them+to+this+higher+standard+is+not+to+much+to+ask%2e%0a%0a++If+health+teachers+can+remember+to+%26quot%3bwalk+what+they+talk%26quot%3b%2c+then+the+credibility+of+what+they+are+saying+will+be+better+received+by+the+studetns%2e++I+believe+that+Dr%2e+Jenkins+summed+it+up+best+when+he+said+%26quot%3bpromoting+health+should+manifest+itself+in+personal+commitment+to+the+pursuit+of+a+balanced+healthy+lifestyle%26quot%3b

455 Being+a+role+model+is+not+a+choice+we+have%2c+but+a+responsibility+we+are+given+by+the+nature+of+our+job+in+education%2e+Davis+said+that+health+educators+don%27t+have+the+luxury+of+accepting+or+rejecting+the+responsibility+of+being+a+role+model%2e++It+isn%27t+something+that+can+be+turned+on+and+off%2e++A+quote+by+Chenoweth+%281979%29+states+%26quot%3ball+teachers+are+%27on+stage%27+at+all+times%26quot%3b%2e++Our+students+see+us+not+only+in+the+classroom+but+at+basketball+games%2c+concerts%2c+shopping%2c+etc%2e+and+their+little+eyes+our+taking+in+our+actions+and+behaviors%2e++Our+weight+and+physical+fitness+tend+to+be+a+personal+area+and+we+may+think+it+is+no+one+else%27s+business%2e+Under+the+citcumstances%2c+though%2c+we+are+teaching+wellness+and+fitness%2e++If+we+have+that+%26quot%3bdo+as+I+say+and+not+as+I+do%26quot%3b+attitute+we+are+being+a+hypocrite+in+our+field%2e++In+a+sense%2c+our+credibility+is+lost+in+the+entire+area+of+health+and+wellness%2e+In+our+educational+classes+we+learned+the+importance+of+modeling+in+our+lessons+we+teach%2e++%26quot%3bOne+of+the+most+effective+techniques+for+teaching+a+desired+behavior+is+modeling+or+obeservational+learning%2e%26quot%3b+%28King+1982%29%2e++Some+times+students+including+myself+have+a+difficult+time+focusing+on+what+is+being+said+by+the+teacher%2c+but+they+can+observe+and+make+judgements+based+on+the+way+I+look+and+the+things+I+do%2e++These+articles+did+a+great+job+in+making+me+aware+of+my+continuing+responsibility+to+be+a+role+model+in+every+area+of+wellness+and+fitness%2e++What+an+awesome+job+we+have%21++We+get+to+practice+what+we+preach%21
456 The+idea+of+the+PE%2fHealth+teacher+in+the+position+of+role+model+is+intriguing+and+sad%2e++Looking+back+at+my+own+health+ed%2e+role+models%2c+not+one+appeared+to+be+overweight+or+partake+in+any+outwardly+unhealthy+habits+or+actions%2e++Quite+the+contrary+was+true%2e++Many%2c+if+not+all%2c+of+the+teachers+I+had+were+models+of+a+healthy+lifestyle%2e++They+ran%2c+lifted+weights%2c+and+took+care+of+themselves+nutritionally+%96+many+days+with+the+students%2e%0a%0aPeople+may+try+to+renounce+the+position+of+role+model%2e++Charles+Barclay+tried+to+tell+us%2c+%93I+am+not+a+role+model%2e%94++Reality+was+that+kids+looked+up+to+him%2e++Andrew+Jenkins%2c+Ph%2e+D%2e%2c+in+Role+Modeling+in+Health+and+Physical+Education%2c+refers+to+Good+and+Brophy%2c+1980%2c+%93the+fact+that+teachers%2c+%28or+any+other+role+model%29+can+not+necessarily+choose+when+they+will+or+will+not+be+modeling+for+students+so+they+must+be+aware+that+they+are+potential+role+models+at+all+times%2e%94++This+tells+me+that+I+am+in+the+spotlight+now+and+always%2c+so+be+ready%2e%0a%0aAs+a+society%2c+we+discriminate+against+%93fat%94+people+%28Ligos+2002%29%2e++To+make+PE+teachers+follow+a+standard+of+appearance+and+body+composition+might+just+%93reinforce+popular+prejudices%2e%94+%28Davis+1999%29++Again%2c+we+have+to+live+in+the+here+and+now%2e++An+educator+that+looks+the+part+of+a+healthy+person+will+have+more+credibility+than+a+fat+one%2e++Students+that+were+both+fit+and+fat+had+the+same+outlook+in+viewing+the+video+tapes+for+the+Melville+study+%96+the+fit+instructor+was+more+of+an+expert+than+the+fat+one+%28Melville+and+Cardinal+1988%29%2e%0a%0aAs+a+society%2c+we+are+fat%2e++As+of+1996%2c+1%2f3+of+the+nation+is+considered+obese+%28Orey+1996%29%2e++Maybe+it+is+time+for+PE+teachers+to+step+up+and+be+role+models%2e++The+first+step+for+educators+may+be+back+at+the+undergraduate+level%2e++Eastern+Washington+University+has+a+fitness+entrance+standard+to+get+into+the+PE+department+%28Melville+and+Cardinal+1998%29%2e++I+don%92t+see+a+problem+with+this%2e++Central+Washington+University+has+an+entrance+exam+for+candidates+to+the+Education+Department%2e++The+SAT+and+ACT+are+used+to+determine+fit+candidates+for+college+entrance%2e++Whether+it+is+in+the+classroom+or+on+the+field%2c+we+are+role+models%2e
457 I+feel+that+being+a+positive+role+model+is+a+responsibilty+we+accept+as+teachers%2e+The+concept+of+role+modeling+developed+by+Bandura+through+a+theory+of+%93vicarious+learning%94%2c+which+asserts+that+much+of+what+people+learn+is+through+observation+and+imitation+of+others%2e+%28Bandura+1977%29%2e++++What+we+do+speaks+so+much+louder+than+what+we+say%2e+%28Jenkins+2002%29%2e++I+couldn%92t+agree+more%2e++A+early+study+on+the+effects+of+a+physical+educator%92s+appearance+on+his+or+her+teaching+effectiveness+supports+the+ideas+of+Bandura+and+Jenkins%2c+concluding+that+it+is+difficult+for+a+person+to+take+a+fat+physical+educator+seriously%2e+%28Melville+%26amp%3b+Cardinal+++1988%29%2e++Although+the+Melville%2fCardinal+study+is+14+years+old%2c+everyday+observation+makes+it+difficult+to+argue+with+its+basic+premise%2e%0a%09In+respect+to+role+modeling%2c+children+hear+the+words%2c+but+their+observation+of+the+actions+has+more+impact%2e+%28Berryman+%26amp%3b+Brightner+1994%29%2e++This+is+illustrated+by+basketball+player+Charles+Barkley%92s+well%2dknown+proclamation+to+sports%92+fans+that+%93I+am+not+a+role+model%2e%94++Despite+Barkley%92s+verbal+disclaimer%2c+his+actions+on+the+court+made+him+a+de+facto+role+model+for+a+great+number+of+young+people%2e++Again%2c+actions+speak+louder+than+words%2e+The+Barkley+case+reaffirms+Bandura%92s+theory+that+a+mentor+cannot+choose+to+be+a+role+model%2c+but+because+of+the+importance+of+role+modeling+to+effective+mentoring%2c+good+mentors+behave+as+if+their+followers+regard+them+as+role+models%2e+%28Bandura+1977%29%2e%0a%09As+an+experienced+secondary+physical+educator%2c+and+an+extreme+fitness+advocate%2c+I+applaud+the+attempts+of+commentators+Bandura%2c+Jenkins%2c+Melville%2c+and+Cardinal+to+bring+light+to+the+%93problem%94+of+unfit+health+and+physical+educators%2e++Hopefully%2c+their+discussions%2c+along+with+physical+educational+programs+designed+to+produce+a+fitter+end+product%2c+will+result+in+more+efficient+and+physically+fit+entry%2dlevel+health+and+fitness+teachers%2e
458 Role+Models%0a%0aAre+physical+educators+effective+role+models+and+teachers+only+if+they%92re+physically+fit%3f++Size%2ffitness+may+well+be+a+factor+towards+effectiveness%2e++The+Melville+%26amp%3b+Maddalozzo+%281988%29+study+results+show+students+as+less+attentive+and+scoring+lower+on+the+13+question+examination+with+the+%93fat+suit%94+instructor%2e++This+study+is+limited+and+as+the+article%2c+%93The+Problem+Body+Fatness+Within+Our+Profession%94+states%2c+%93more+nationwide+testing+of+both+majors+and+professionals+is+warranted%2e%94%0a%0aWould+age+become+the+next+factor+in+considering+the+effectiveness+of+a+physical+educator%3f++Would+a+young%2c+fit+25+year+old+be+more+effective+role+model+than+the+40+year+old+teacher%3f++%0a%0aRole+models+in+a+physical+education+setting+are+developed+from+every+day+experiences+and+interactions+between+the+teacher+and+students%2e++The+teacher%92s+actions+should+be+a+greater+factor+towards+effectiveness%2e++Creating+an+environment+where+each+student+feels+comfortable+and+happy%2c+participating+in+quality+physical+activity+should+be+the+greatest+factor+in+effective+teaching%2e+++%0a%0aThe+following+is+an+excerpt+commenting+on+creating+environment+from%3a++%0a%0aAAPHERD+Professionals+in+the+21st+Century%3a++Bouncing+balls+or+balancing+lives++%0aJournal+of+Physical+Education%2c+Recreation+%26amp%3b+Dance%3aReston%3bMarch+2000%3bMarcia+Carter%0a%0a%94Effective+leaders+also+create+environments+that+produce+%93flow%94+experiences%2e++A+flow+experience+occurs+when+the+participant%92s+skill+are+matched+with+challenge+levels+of+the+activity%2e++According+to+Csikszentmihalyi+%281990%29%2c+when+a+participant+is+in+a+flow+state%2c+there+is+balance+between+the+subjectively+perceived+challenge+and+the+skills+needed+to+be+successful%2e++In+this+state%2c+the+participant+experiences+feelings+of+control+and+enjoyment+that+lead+to+self%2dgrowth+and+a+willingness+to+pursue+higher+levels+of+challenge%2e++Thus%2c+when+leaders+structure+the+environment+so+that+participants+achieve+flow+states%2c+they+are+promoting+self%2ddetermination+and+freedom+to+succeed%2e++These+qualities+cause+participants+to+be+inherently+satisfied+with+the+experience+and+encourage+them+to+make+decisions+that+promote+their+well+being%2e%94
