52 I+am+at+the+middle+school+level+and+2+years+ago+the+male+position+was+eliminated%2e+All+my+classes+are+co%2ded+with+a+male+aide+for+the+locker+room+and+to+help+me%2e+The+aide+they+hired+this+year+is+great%2e+The+co%2ded+classes+are+not%2e+The+genders+are+at+different+levels+of+maturity+both+physically+and+mentally%2e+The+size+of+my+classes+as+well+as+the+attitude+of+some+do+not+allow+me+to+do+much+teaching%2e+I+will+not+however%2c+%26quot%3broll+out+the+balls%26quot%3b%2e+I+will+continue+to+try+to+teach+Physical+Education+%2d+not+athletics+or+recess%2e+Both+years+I+have+had+a+class+of+8th+graders+with+at+least+35+students+with+only+6%2d10+being+females%2e+This+not+fair+to+either+group%2e+I+would+like+to+go+back+to+a+male+and+female+teacher%2c+separate+classes+that+once+in+awhile+get+together+for+some+co%2ded+games+or+activities%2e
56 %26quot%3bGood+questions+on+the+coed+issues%2c+it+will+be+interesting+to+read%0awhether+others+feel+the+same+way+or+not%2e+I+agree+coed+classes+create%0aproblems+and+they+vary+according+to+gender+when+the+subject+changes+ie%2e+Too%0afew+females+in+sports+lead+to+them+being+left+out+%2c+the+guys+refuse+to+pass%0ato+them+and+their+skills+have+little+chance+of+developing+in+a+games%0aenvironment+unless+strict+controls+are+imposed%2e+Likewise+in+Dance+the%0areversal+is+true+in+that+males+feel+emasculated+unless+there+is+an+effort%0ato+present+some+stimuli+which+boys+can+appreciate%2c+often+sporting+elements%0ain+this+environment+works+well+for+them%2c+letting+them+take+a+skill+%28bowling%0aaction+or+rowing+action%29+and+repeating+it+3x+then+changing+the%0arhythm%2fdimension%2fdirection+and+repeating+it+again+before+joining+with+a%0apartner+to+provide+action%2freaction+sequences%2c+allows+them+to+concentrate+on%0asomething+they+feel+comfortable+with+and+which+they+eventually+will%0arecognise+as+a+rhythmical+sequences+akin+to+a+dance+performance%2e+However%0athis+ignores+the+female+need+for+more+aesthetic+or+emotional+stimuli%2e+Thus%2c%0ait+is+important+in+both+areas+to+recognise+that+both+the+minority+and%0amajority+sections+must+be+accomodated+to+have+an+enjoyable+learning%0aexperience%2e+Protection+of+the+minority+group+at+the+expense+of+the+majority%0agroup+is+not+a+solution+either%2e%0a%09One+solution+suggested+earlier+in+this+forum+is+to+separate+classes%0aby+skill+but+in+the+games+environment+this+is+already+done+by+use+of%0a%26quot%3bvarsity%26quot%3b+teams+which+allow+skilled+players+to+compete+at+a+different%0alevel%2e+However+in+a+classromm+the+less+skilled+players+can+learn+a+great%0adeal+from+interacting+with+better+athletes+and+pairing+people+of+different%0askill+levels+in+a+practise+situation+often+reduces+the+competetive+aspect%0aand+allows+both+to+concentrate+on+improving+the+action%2e+Likewise+in+a+dance%0aenvironment+the+interaction+of+males+and+females+is+imperative+to+the%0asuccess+of+nurturing+a+creative+experience+and+often+the+less+skilled%0adancer+will+produce+some+of+the+most+exciting+ideas%2e++So+what+is+the%0aanswer%3f+%26quot%3b
57 I+have+some+hints+about+playing+coed+games%2c+and+I+don%27t+mean+making+up+ridiculous+rules+to+over+compensate%2c+but+I+will+save+them+for+until+my+next+web+responsibility%2e%0aI+still+admit+trouble+dealing+with+classes+of+46+boys+and+4+girls%2c+or+21+unathletic+girls+and+4+boys%2c+or+38+boys+and+12+girls%2c+or+24+girls+and+6+boys%2e++These+classes+were+all+given+me+in+my+National+School+of+Excellence%2e%0aSuch+gross+imbalances+should+be+outlawed%2e++COED+legislation+could+not+possible+have+intended+us+to+have+to+deal+with+such+a+bad+educational+environment%2e

70 Title+IX+served+a+very+valuable+service+by+bringing+girls+athletics+to+the+fore+front+and+supplying+them+with+opportunities+that+were+not+available+to+them+before+Title+IX%2e+However+boys+and+girls+are+not+equal+phyically+and+therefore+should+not+be+put+together+in+sport+activities%2e+Even+in+an+individual+activity+like+golf%2c+men+and+women+tees+are+not+placed+in+the+same+location%2e+Physical+education+classes+should+be+single+gender+with+a+few+exceptions+like+dance+and+some+individual+type+classes%2e+Perhaps+in+some+cases+Co%2ded+volleyball+is+OK%2e+But+even+then%2c+in+the+sport+world%2c+the+net+height+is+different+for+boys+and+girls%2e+Unfortunately+in+most+cases+special+rules+have+to+be+in+place+for+boys+and+girls+to+compete+at+the+same+level%2e+That+then+is+not+equal+nor+is+it+the+intent%2c+I%27m+sure%2c+of+the+original+language+of+the+law%2e
86 I+think+coed+classes+are+of+value+if+the+person+teaching+the+class+has+a+wide+variety+of+educational+tricks+to+encourage+all+students%2e++If+classes+are+unbalanced+modify+lesson+plans+to+involve+all+students+at+differing+levels%2e++The+teacher+picks+teams+not+the+students%2e++Have+the+teams+with+a+wide+variety+of+skill%2e++It+doesn%27t+matter+if+the+student+is+a+boy+or+a+girl%2e++When+playing+team+sports+allow+for+peer+tutoring%2e++I+teach+team+sports+and+personal+fitness+and+I+have+never+had+a+problem+with+coed+classes%2c+I+think+it+is+fun+and+enjoy+the+challenges+of+the+%26quot%3bmotor+morons%26quot%3b+performing+with+the+highly+skilled%2e

110 I+believe+that+co%2ded+classes+should+still+be+in+the+physical+education+classroom%2e++From+a+co%2ded+classroom+males+and+females+would+both+benefit+in+sports+that+are+non%2dcontact%2e++For+example%2c+sports+like+volleyball%2c+tennis%2c+archery%2c+softball%2c+soccer%2c+golf%2c+badminton%2c+bowling%2c+ultimate+Frisbee%2c+swimming+and+a+dance+class%2e++By+having+both+genders+interact%2c+I+think+that+both+males+and+females+will+both+have+an+equal+opportunity+to+develop+and+participate+equally+in+a+physical+education+classroom%2e++Sports+that+involve+more+accidental+contact+should+be+separated+so+both+genders+will+have+a+better+chance+to+improve+his+or+her+skills%2e++From+the+sports+that+may+have+accidental+contact+some+females+or+males+might+shy+away+when+there+might+be+an+incident+when+contact+is+present%2e+++So+for+that+reason+I+feel+that+it+would+be+beneficial+to+separate+the+genders+to+give+each+student+a+better+chance+to+enhance+his+or+her+skills%2e
111 You+wouldn%27t+separate+high+and+low+skilled+students+into+different+classes+so+why+would+you+separate+boys+and+girls%3f+We+agree+with+Jeff+Whittaker%27s+post+that+co%2ded+classes+can+succeed+with+the+proper+rules+and+protocols%2e+You+would+not+want+to+separate+males+and+females+because+they+need+to+learn+how+to+work+with+and+learn+from+each+other+for+the+rest+of+their+lives%2e+The+physical+education+setting+is+an+excellent+place+for+males+and+females+to+practice+socializing+and+interacting+with+each+other%2e+We+should+not+eliminate+this+opportunity+from+our+students%2e
112 It+is+crucial+that+we+have+a+coeducational+teaching+setting%2e++We+believe+coeducation+is+important+because+interactions+occurring+in+these+classes+are+valuable+for+the+rest+of+our+lives%2e++When+a+program+is+well+established+stereotypes+will+not+be+reinforced+as+strongly%2e++This+gives+the+students+an+opportunity+to+grow+socially+and+physically+at+the+same+time%2e++Coeducation+also+gives+the+students+an+opportunity+to+interact+appropriately+with+members+of+the+opposite+sex%2e+%0aAlthough+we+understand+that+the+sexes+develop+at+different+rates%2c+classes+containing+males+and+females+separately+may+be+more+beneficial+to+the+physical+domain+of+the+student%2e+Coeducational+classes+cover+all+aspects+of+a+fully+developed+person+in+today%27s+world+when+dealing+with+the+opposite+gender%2e
211 We+have+taught+physical+education+coed+for+about+25+years%2e+We+are+a+Class+C+school+in+Northern+NY%2e+Up+until+four+years+ago+our+classes+were+large+and+the+mix+of+males+and+females+was+quite+uneven%2c+the+situation+is+better+now+though+not+ideal%2e+In+the+beginning+girls+were+hesitant+in+participating+with+the+boys%2e+We+still+have+individuals+who+are+alergic+to+sweat%2e+We+have+a+fairly+traditional+curriculum+that+we+modify+as+to+the+activities+we+do+yearly%2e+We+have+added+some+strategies+that+have+helped+our+students+reach+our+state+standards%2c+be+succesful%2cand+to+develop+enthusiasm+for+physical+activity%2e+We+have+incorporated+some+of+the+sport+education+ideas+into+our+activities%2e+One+of+the+most+important+factors+is+having+the+teacher+do+all+the+grouping%2d+whether+it+be+for+skill+drill+activities+or+for+the+small+team+games+we+play%2e+Factors+to+consider+in+grouping+are%3a+skill+level%3bpast+successful+experiences+in+class%3band+type+of+personality%2e+This+has+to+be+preplanned+before+one+begins+a+unit+of+instruction%2e+It+takes+more+time%2c+but+the+results+are+worth+it%2e+For+example%2ctaking+a+high+skilled+student+who+isn%27t+so+intense+and+pairing+them+with+a+lower+skilled+student+has+been+one+successful+strategy%2e+All+of+our+team+games+are+played+by+small+numbers+on+each+team+on+modified+fields%2ccourts%2c+with+modified+goals%2e+When+we+do+soccer+or+lacrosse%2c+for+example%2c+we+play+across+the+width+of+the+field+using+the+center+line+as+one+sideline%2e+The+other+sideline+is+3+cones+spread+out%2e+No+more+than+5+on+a+team+and+the+goals+will+be+2+cones+x+feet+apart+depending+upon+the+sport%2e+The+first+2+periods+we+play+we+may+start+out+that+only+girls+can+score%2c+the+whole+time+or+most+of+the+time%2e+The+boys+get+the+general+idea%2e+After+we+go+to+anyone+can+score%2c+I+remind+the+boys+that+we+do+not+want+to+go+back+to+where+only+girls+can+score%2e+When+we+do+drills+leading+up+to+the+games+we+usually+only+work+in+pairs%2e+We+encourage+students+to+give+positive+feedback+to+each+other+to+help+the+other+improve%2e+We+remind+our+students+of+personal+management+skills+such+as+respect%2ccommunication%2c+collaboration%2csportsmanship%2ccooperation%2cetc%2e+In+a+large+class+we+can+have+4+games+going+at+once%2c+instead+of+1+large+game+with+one+ball+and+a+lot+f+students+standing+around%2e
253 I+dont+have+a+problem+with+the+Co%2ded+issue+in+PE%2e++My+problem+is+with+the+class+sizes%2e++When+you+are+teaching+60%2b+students%2c+its+hard+to+address+the+issues+you+all+are+encountering%2e+%0a%0aCurrently+the+make+up+of+some+of+my+classes+is+35+average+students+25+students+with+discipline+problems+or+are+special+education+%28not+adapted+PE%29%2c+and+5+retained+students%2e++Thats+a+tough+class+to+manage%2e++%0a%0aIt+would+be+nice+if+PE+was+respected+as+a+class+where+student+learning+is+taking+place%2c+rather+than+%27supervised+recess%27%2c+or+something+to+that+effect%2e++If+the+number+of+students+per+class+was+reduced%2c+the+problems+with+boy%2fgirl+classes+would+also+be+reduced%2e
383 I+believe+that+co%2ded+classes+gives+students+an+opportunity+to+interact+appropriately+with+members+of+the+opposite+sex%2e+++If+we+continue+to+convey+to+our+youth+that+males+and+females+should+be+split+because+one+sex+can+or+can%27t+do+something+the+other+sex+can+is+telling+them+that+everyone+is+not+equal%2e++I+believe+by+using+the+Sport+Education+Model+in+your+classroom+will+help+how+the+curriculum+is+taught%2e++It+will+give+every+student+a+role+on+a+team+to+help+build+teamwork+as+to+individual+concentration+while+individual+skill+is+being+developed%2e++I+do+agree+with+Nicole+Webb+in+that+the+physical+education+setting+is%0aan+excellent+place+for+males+and+females+to+practice+socializing+and+interacting%0awith+each+other%2e++Why+would+we+want+to+eliminate+this+opportunity+from+our+students%2e
