This book is designed to assist all Physical Educators with the use of technology in their classes. If one is either a beginning teacher or a veteran, this book is for you. The book is designed to be "user friendly". By this I mean that the layout of the book provides a logical progression of information for the reader. The format of each chapter enables the reader to understand both theory and practice. The author uses a clever introduction for each chapter that the reader can easily relate to; this is followed with the chapter information. Thus, the stage is set for the reader in each chapter. Finally a general chapter summary is available for every chapter. I found myself often reading this section first so I could rapidly absorb the general information within the chapters. There is something in this book for everyone. If you are just beginning to understand technology and even if you are a "techno whiz," this book can assist you. The book is designed for new teachers as well as teachers already in our field, particularly those who may not be using technology to its fullest. I truly appreciated the theme of the book: technology is yet another tool to help us better serve our students. Technology does not replace quality teaching. This book offers a broad-based definition of technology that extends beyond computers to include audio and video technology, software, exercise assessment devices to name but a few. Some basic computer information is presented for those teachers entering the world of "techno devices:-I found the explanations to be simple to understand and yet thorough in their concept presentation. Certainly one of the difficulties of writing this kind of book section is the rapid evolution that occurs within this field. However, the author acknowledges this fact and does indicate it is up to the teacher to educate oneself with regards to the latest computer advances. Armed with the general insights provided by the author, a teacher is well equipped to ask the proper questions about the latest technological advances. The book not only shares general information about the multitude of technology tools available, it also suggests proper applications. I found this to be most helpful. One soon realizes that daily and or routine chores can be better handled with particular use of data organizers. Additionally, many examples are provided to demonstrate how student learning, teacher presentation can be enhanced with the use of computers, hand-held devices, audio and video technology. I found the application parts of these chapters to most helpful for teachers wanting to increase instructional time and reducing management time. The information on the World Wide Web was basic in its presentation. Thus, those who may have a concern about their ability to access this vital link to the world, have their fears reduced. Those of us who are "surfers" can find some valuable tips as well. The chapters on software and student learning assessment are valuable for all of us. Again, we simply need to recognize that further advances have been made since this book was written and published. Nonetheless, you can be "armed" with enough information to help you make informed decisions. The final two chapters are critical to the book. The author offers some practical applications to the school site-how does one enhance student learning. I found this chapter interesting and informative. The last chapter is, as it should be, the future of technology in Physical Education. The future is here, now what's available to us? This is a well-written book, the author understands her subject matter and the book reflects her expertise. I recommend using this in teacher education programs as well as by individual teachers already making a difference with student's lives. For more information, or to order this book, click here.
