REVIEW
Target Audience/Purpose:
This edited book targets Physical Education Teachers, Athletes,
Coaches, and Sport Psychologists. The purpose of this book
is to guide and inform the reader on the various effective
psychological strategies that may enhance physical activity
and sport performance.
Content:
This edited book was written by more than twenty professionals
in the field of Sports Psychology which focuses on five components;
(a) Motivation and Leadership, (b) Social Interaction, (c)
Mental Training, (d) Program Implementation, and (e) other
Related Physiological Issues. There are a number of sub-topics
that fall in these categories that are specifically focused
on athletes. Topics such as: (a) imagery, (b) confidence enhancement,
(c) attention control, (d) motivation, (e) goals setting,
and (f) relaxation techniques. There are other areas in the
text that specifically cater to coaches, such as: (a) expectations,
(b) reinforcement, (c) performance feedback, (d) decision
making, (e) effective communication, (f) training implementation
programs, (g) drug abuse, and (h) burnout.
Strength/Limitations:
Throughout the text the authors provide countless research
studies that inform the reader on the specific topics. Sample
programs and summary segments are given in each chapter to
aid in comprehension. Moreover, diagrams are presented and
are extremely straightforward that directly relate to the
content discussed. One limitation of this text is that it
may be perceived as difficult to read due to the use of jargon.
Summary:
Each chapter contains multiple contributing authors who are
very knowledgeable on their topic. The authors did a fantastic
job assembling and unfolding the information to the reader,
along with offering an approach to apply this information
to the real world. This text can be used for academic purposes,
such as a textbook in a college or a university course, as
well as be used by coaches for immediate assistance in performance
enhancement. As a coach, I will encourage my athletes to read
this book.
