"Winter Feels Good"

Mary Jo Tarallo
mjtarallo@thesnowtrade.org

Winter Feels Good is a public information program that addresses how children and adults can be more active in the winter with snow sports activities. It addresses how to dress for winter outdoor activities, what foods to eat for long periods outdoors and much more.

We have a special section on Winter Feels Good specifically for physical education teachers and it includes an extensive array of information on how to include snowshoeing in physical education programs including a detailed curriculum that was developed for Fairfax by Dr. Linda Rikard of George Mason University. The section also provides information about other winter programs for children. Link are on the site. I suggest that you check out the web site at www.winterfeelsgood.com and its companion site www.wintertrails.org.

Winter Trails is a free day of snowshoeing and cross country skiing at approximately 100 locations throughout the U.S. The event is January 8, 2005.

We are working with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to create a "President's Challenge" using snow sports activites as a way to get fit and earn points towards a President's Challenge Award. The Challenge "officially" starts on January 8 with Winter Trails Day but, of course, a Challenge can be started anytime. Information about the program is on the Winter Feels Good and Winter Trails web sites.
