Hand-Eye
1 Gr. K-2

Class 1

Equipment needed:

  • Volleyball poles (2)
  • Green volleyball nets (2)
  • Eye bolt for wall (1)
  • Beach balls (20)

Warm up:

  • Snake in the grass
    • Use net as boundary: anyone touching the net, touching the red line under the net, or touching the blue base of the pole is automatically caught and turns into a snake
    • Choose 2-3 students to be the 1st snakes and they lie on bellies with eyes closed
    • Pretend to be asleep (no snoring, because snakes don't snore!)
    • Everyone else must be touching a snake in a polite spot with their fingers
    • On "go" snakes wake up and try to slither after others
    • Anyone caught becomes a snake
    • Re-start game with the last kids left

Skill Development:

  • All with a partner and a beach ball to share (sit foot to foot under the net)
  • How many toss and catches can you and your partner get over the net?
  • Catch with 2/1 hands
  • How many in :30?
    • Can you beat your score?
  • How many in 1:00?
    • Can you beat your score?
  • How many tap and catches can you and your partner get over the net (tap it overt the net and your partner catches it)
  • Tap with 2/1 hands
    • How many in :30?
      • Can you beat your score?
    • How many in 1:00?
      • Can you beat your score?

Application:

  • Messy backyard with beach balls
    • Divide class in 1/2
    • Each with own ball
    • On "go" groups try to toss ball to self and tap it over the net
    • Must stay on their side of the net
      • Get one point for every ball on the other side when the whistle blows
      • Any tap after the whistle blows results in the other team getting all of the points
      • See if the teams can "win" the round by getting more points than before
