International Walk to School Week

Part of what we do for our students is to create in them an appreciation for physical activity. We all work hard to create this feeling in our students, so that they will be able to stay physically active on their own. We have to remember to show them ways to be physically active that may not be what they first think of (sports, backyard games...). One of thses ways is always right there infront of them: simply walking to school! We all realize that this is not always possible, but this opportunity is there and should be taken advantage of whenever possible. Below are four reasons given on the Walk and Bike to School web site to promote walking and biking to school:

1. To enhance the health of kids

2. Increased physical activity can combat a host of health problems facing kids today.

To improve air quality and the environment

3. Replacing car trips to school with walking or bicycling can help reduce air pollution.

To create safer routes for walking and bicycling

4. Sidewalks, education programs and traffic calming measures are some of the ways to improve conditions.

The first reason is reason enough to become involved. After all, we are in business to enhance the health of our kids. Check out their web site for more information about the International Walk to School Week from October 3-7, 2005.
