Partner Scooter Soccer Tom Winiecki Mott Road Elementary School Fayetteville, NY
We have all played scooter soccer with our elementary students. It is always one of the highlights of the fall, or any other time of the year that you bring this game out. Everyone has their own scooter and sits on it as they move around. Usually a light, oversized ball ("omnikin ball", or large beach ball) is used to encourage the kids to also head the ball when appropriate. If the ball hits the opposite wall, a "goal" is scored and the first team all back to their end line (sitting on their scooters of course) gets the ball tossed toward them to re-start the game. How about this "twist." Have one student sit on a scooter and have a partner be their "engine." The "pusher" is in charge of getting the player where they need to be. The "pusher" cannot touch the ball at all. Safety, of course is a concern. Make sure that everyone understands the level of trust involved is such an activity. You may want to take some time to "practice" moving around this way. You know your classes best. Once safety is no longer a concern, the aerobic benefits are outstanding for the pusher. It is a great way to incorporate the "overload" principle into your teaching. The kids will certainly understand it after this activity! |
