Soccer
Gr. 3-4
Class #1
Equipment needed:
- Nerf Soccer balls (25).
- Jump Ropes (25).
- Music system.
- Stopwatch.
- Large Cage Ball.
Warm-up:
- "Jump Rope Around the World."
- All jump rope by themselves.
- Teacher begins to time the class jumping.
- Each student gets 5 "lives."
- When they miss with the rope the fifth time, they are
"out."
- They go to another area in the gym (behind the purple line
on the storeroom side of the gym).
- They continue jumping once they use all of their
lives.
- Once 10 students are in this area, the stopwatch
stops.
- Class gets credit for 1,000 miles on the map for every 1:00
that they jumped.
- Until there are 10 students jumping behind the purple
line.
- Class also gets the chance to earn extra credit
mileage.
- Teacher picks one of the jumpers that used up all of their
lives but were continuing to jump behind the purple line.
- Give that person a hand held pulse monitor.
- If their heart rate is within the target range (150-180), they
earn a "free 1,000 miles" for their class.
Skill Development:
- Introduce different parts of the foot that the kids can use to
kick a soccer ball with:
- Inside.
- Instep.
- Toe.
- Heel.
- Outside.
- Have kids kick the ball against the wall using the different
parts of their foot.
- Now, give them :30 to kick the ball against the wall using a
specific part of their foot.
- Kids keep track of the number of kicks they get in
:30.
- After using all parts of the foot, bring them together and
ask them which part of their foot they scored highest on.
*Reinforce that different people are better at different
things!
- Introduce dribbling.
- re-mention using all parts of their foot to dribble.
- Play dribble keep away from teacher.
- All dribble a ball.
- Teacher can steal a ball from anyone that looses control of
their ball.
- Teacher can't steal a ball from anyone who is controlling
their ball.
- *Can modify game so teacher can steal ball from anyone.
Application:
- Humphrey Ball:
- Divide group in two groups.
- Have them sit foot to foot, with their partner along the
center Green and White line.
- Lines lay in the "Dead Bug" position to start the game.
- Laying on their backs.
- Legs in the air.
- HSide by side with the people next to them.
- Teacher rolls cage ball ("Humphrey") between two
groups.
- Both lines try to kick the ball with their feet, or hit it
with their hands so it touches the floor on the other side of
the other team.
- After a point, the first two kids in each line "cross over
and rotate."
- They go to the front of the line and join the opposite
team.
- Review which parts of the foot were used in the game.
- What did the ball do when hit with different parts of the
foot?
