An "Ideal" Elementary Physical Education Program
Matt Steenberg
District Coordinator of Physical Education
Fayetteville-Manlius School
Manlius, NY
I was asked to discuss what my thoughts are regarding an outstanding elementary to high school Physical Education Program.
I sincerely believe that any educational program must be sequential in nature so that the basics are introduced and taught during the elementary years. These basics are then reintroduced and fortified by the intermediate experience with expansion and mastery of these concepts at the commencement level.
I envision the elementary Physical Education experience as if it was the foundation of a house. The foundation must be strong so that additional floors can be constructed on top that expand and display its' strength. A strong elementary program involves basic concepts of body movement with others and in spaces. Concept areas of rhythms, motor movement skills, ball handling skills, sport and recreational fundamentals are needed. Additionally and very importantly a strong program emphasizes how these concept areas create a health enhancing lifestyle are required. Fitness education should be introduced at early levels to create the mindset of wellness in every student's thoughts. The elements of Health Related Fitness should be introduced and integrated into every class so that young people begin to learn the value of a healthy active lifestyle and its benefits for them as they grow.
Another conceptual theme that I think should be emphasized is the theme that physical activity can provide opportunities for enjoyment by oneself or with others. The opportunity of challenge, self-expression and communication are vital life skills that can be incorporated into a strong fitness-based program. Life skills such as self-control, accountability, courage, cooperation and trust are but a few important tools every student needs to experience to be an active participant in our society. All of the concepts and principles I have discussed thus far carry on and up into the floors of the house. The intermediate floors now have the basics to expand and add too. Experience such as Outdoor Education, Adventure and Risk activities, as well as additional skill work on sport and recreational techniques is needed at the intermediate level. The emphasis should also be with Health Related Future Concepts incorporated into every unit.
When the student reaches the top floor of this well constructed house, he or she should be prepared to experience and explore their knowledge base through numerous activities offered in an elective format. High School Physical Education students should have the opportunities to experience numerous activities involving Health Related Fitness, Individual Sports, Team Sports, Risk and Challenge Adventures, and the preparation of a Wellness Profile for Life. These students should attain enough knowledge of activity and Health enhancing concepts through movement, that they can individually assess their fitness for life.
The final structure of a house is the peaked roof so that the valuables that are inside can be protected. I profess that these valuables are the concepts of Health Related Fitness and Wellness that are introduced in the foundation and fortified floor by floor up to the roof.
We are extremely fortunate here at the Fayetteville-Manlius School District to have skilled, innovative, knowledgeable, enthusiastic builders of our foundation. These dedicated professionals provide our students with the necessary tools to keep their health strong for life. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with all of them!
