Hurdles/4 Person Relay

Equipment needed:
- Hurdles (12)
- Cones (14)
- Set up track (that is mowed into the grass) with cones
- 2 cones each at the corners (passing zones)
- Set up same colored cones to mark each passing zone
- One cone at the top of the turn at each end
- Batons (6)
Warm-up:
- "Team Runing"
  - All in groups of 4-5
  - Stand one behind the other at the starting line
  - Everyone starts jogging slowly around the track , following the leader
  - Last person in line sprints to the front
  - Once he gets to the front, he slows down
  - Repeat with last person sprinting to the front
  - Stress leader going very slowly
  - Score one point for each time someone new sprints to the front
  - Repeat to try to beat best score
Skill Development:
- Divide class in 1/2
- One group to the hurdles
- One group to the relay
- Switch groups half way through the class
Hurdles
- All in 4 groups in front of each lane of hurdles
- Demonstrate how hurdle will set up again after getting knocked over
- Only go over a hurdle in one direction
  - So base is on the near side when you go over
- Stress "running" over the hurdle, don't "jump" over it
  - All run over the hurdles, one at a time
  - Come back into line along the outside
  - Teacher check for correct form
- Have kids count their steps between hurdles
- Have them try to get the same number from the start to the 1st hurdle, from the 1st to the 2nd hurdle and from the 2nd hurdle to the finish
Relay
- All in groups of 4 at the starting line, sitting gone behind the other
- Give 1st person the baton
  - Explain that the baton must cross the finish line, but it must be carried, it can't be thrown
- Send each person on relay team to a corner of the track
- Run relay
  - After you hand off the baton, stay there at that spot for the next race
  - Everyone will run each "leg" of the relay
  - Tell anchor man the time their team got
  - They tell the new anchor man what time their team has to get to "win" the race
