TITLE IX: IMPLICATIONS FOR WOMEN IN
SPORT AND EDUCATION

Parks, Bowling Green State University,

An
exciting new instructional resource
is available for those of you who teach
about Title IX, conduct research on
Title IX, or are simply interested in
gender equity. The National Association
for Girls and Women in Sport, Bowling
Green State University, and WBGU-PBS
have teamed up to produce a 3-disc DVD
set titled Title
IX: Implications for Women in Sport
and Education.
Work on the
project began in 2005, when WBGU-PBS
and BGSU
Archivist Ann
Bowers recorded face-to-face interviews
with Title IX experts who were attending
a conference on the BGSU campus. During
that same week, they also interviewed
several former BG athletes who were
being honored at BGSU’s Leadership
Years Celebration. Subsequently,
Janet Parks, BGSU Distinguished Teaching
Professor Emeritus, taped additional
interviews to fill in gaps and to include
more information on the perspectives
of men and people of color.
As the DVD
was being created, the following BGSU
sport management faculty members assisted
Parks by providing insightful ideas
about ways in which the information
could be presented in order to be useful
in educational settings: Sally Ross,
Ray Schneider, Nancy Spencer, David
Tobar, and Erianne Weight.
The DVD set
contains 14 separate, 15-to-20-minute
chapters featuring interviews with more
than 30 women and men who discuss topics
such as the requirements of Title IX,
its legislative history, the social
context from which Title IX emerged,
the impact of sport on the lives of
women, experiences of pre-Title IX female
athletes, and intended and unintended
consequences of Title IX. A multitude
of rich visual images supplement the
information and bring it to life. Questions
presented at the end of each chapter
enable students and faculty to explore
the topic in more detail.
Dr. Carol
Cartwright, BGSU President and member
of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate
Athletics, is a featured speaker along
with luminaries such as Bernice Sandler,
Birch Bayh, Christine Brennan, Neil
Abercrombie, Vivian Acosta, Linda Carpenter,
Donna Lopiano, Carole Oglesby, Lucinda
Williams Adams, and many more.
Since its
premiere in the summer of 2009, the
DVD set has been warmly received by
a variety of audiences. A Library
Journal review stated that
it is "perfect for those studying
legal issues, gender issues, and physical
education" and predicted "…this
DVD will continue to be useful for years."
Patricia
Bliss-Egan, President of the Women's
Equity Action League (WEAL), encouraged
members to contact people at their local
school systems, asking them to consider
where it would fit into the curriculum.
Bliss-Egan also recommended that her
members consider gifting the DVD to
schools.
Erin
Buzuvis, Associate Professor of
Law at Western New England College and
co-moderator of the Title IX Blog,
noted that the DVD "…provides
a comprehensive overview of history
and contemporary issues related to Title
IX." She recommended that her readers
- and their libraries - purchase copies.
Dr.
Ellen Staurowsky, Professor and
Graduate Chair of the Sport Management
and Media Department at Ithaca College
added, "This DVD has the potential
to be the best resource and reference
on the origins and implications of the
legislation to date and will be used
throughout the educational system as
well as in governmental agencies."
An annotated
table of contents, complete list of
speakers, clip of the introduction,

at the 2009 AAHPERD convention, where
Dr.
Bernice Sandler, “the godmother
of Title IX,” received the Guiding
Woman in Sport Award. Marcus Harrison
accepted the NAGWS Presidential
Award, which Ketra
Armstrong, NAGWS President and co-Executive
Producer of the DVD, presented to the
entire staff of WBGU-PBS in recognition
of their excellent work on creation
of the DVD and their contributions to
the advancement of opportunities for
girls and women in education and sport.
