Peninsula Heritage 2004-2005 PE Program, Kim Nygaard, Grades 2-5

Welcome Back!

This year I will be adding in new units for PE. A majority of these activities are short term, fun, skill-oriented, and adaptable. Categories for these units will include:

  1. Aerobic Games - Elevates heart rates through continued exercise. Adding. Aerobic games that are of high interest will encourage children to participate & help to eliminate onset of heart disease.
  2. Academic Games - These games teach traditional academic concepts through movement. These games focus on mathematical skills, traffic safety, prepositions, understanding time, food groups, sequencing, and other skills integral to a comprehension education.
1 am introducing a monthly academic challenge in PE this year. One is called "Category Toss" where children challenge each other on categories picked by the children while tossing a ball. This is an elimination game. The child chosen to pick the category will be the child who shows the most character in PE that month.
The second challenge is "Spell Bounce" which is similar to a spelling Bee using words related in sports, fitness, health, and FE. Words will come home at the beginning of each month and these challenges will be done the last week of each month!
  3. Sports Skills Assessments - I will start with Soccer. We will work on skill development, lead up games, games that teach, and goal setting. Other uriits will include volleyball, touch football, basketball, field hockey, softball/baseball, badminton, golf, rope skipping, & Fitness.

  4. PE Teacher of the Day - We will continue giving each child the opportunity to show their leadership skills and run a PE class at least once. The 4th & 5th grade students will be filling out a lesson plan, and an evaluation on their own PE class.
  5. Capture the Ball - Since this is a "Favorite" and a great aerobic, fast pace game of skills, we will try to play this twice a month.
  6. Manipulative and Rhythm Skills - Children will have a chance to explore challenges using balls, bean bags, hula hoops, scooters,
streamers, tempo, rhythm sticks, and individual apparatus.
  7. Family Monthly Calendars - Each month I will attach to the newsletter a fitness calendar that can be enjoyed by families. If interested, initial the skills your family performed and return at the end of each month. You don't have to complete the entire calendar to return it. Just mark off the ones you tried. Family Fitness Can Be Fun!
  8. Spring time comes alive with K-5th grade Physical Fitness Conditioning and testing. The 4th/5th grades enjoy the adventures of Survivor PE Style! Survivor meets once a week until the end of school with all sorts of challenges from physical, strength, balance, mental, math, social studies and more! Archery Unit is a huge hit with 3rd-5th grades, Jump roping rhythms with 2nd-3rd grades, and circus skills with Kindergarten and 1st grade.

Entering my 24th year of teaching PE, 19 of them here at PHS, I try to look for new ideas, games, and resources that keep kids actively involved in games, and PE games, enjoying them while building self esteem. And above all, leaving PE excited about what they have learned, and looking forward to the next PE class just as I do!

Thanks, please feel free to contact me anytime!
