Globetrotting
Grades: 5-8
Purpose:
For students to (a) identify music to a certain country/region, (b) locate
and travel to geographic areas under various movement parameters.
Equipment:
CD/tape boombox/sound system; one recording of music sampled from various
parts of the world; slotted cones with placards naming various continents/regions
of the world (e.g., North America, Europe, Oceania, Middle East) and corresponding
to the countries represented in the musical selections. For compiling
a recording, I use the Leapfrog Explorer globe, which contains
musical selections representing every world country. I activate the globe
to play music from a country of my choosing, and then tape it to a standard
cassette (by taping the music from a country twice consecutively I get
a 15-second continuous recording).
Setup:
Set up the "world" inside of the gym or an open space, placing
the slotted cones/placards in correct orientation as would be found on
a map. You can spread cones out distance-wise to offer a greater workout/challenge.
Use "Antarctica" (no music) as home base, where students begin
their voyage each time before you play the next selection. Instruct students
that they will hear a musical selection and they are to go to the cone
with the placard identifying the area of the world they think the music
comes from. Proscribe various movement restrictions (e.g., skipping, crawling,
high knees) for each musical selection. Tell students they are to move
from home base to their destination before the music stops. When the music
stops, reveal the correct country and location—students run back to Antarctica
to begin again.
