National
Drug and Alcohol Awareness Month Activity
The following
activity is a sequence of tasks designed to simulate the effects of
using various drugs. The lesson is suited for grades 8-12. While the
tasks remain the same the context may be changed as long as students
are shooting at fixed targets in a closed environment (e.g., shooting
a free throw, slow-pitching a softball, playing beanbag tic-tac-toe,
putting a golf ball). In this way, the activity accomodates various
curriculum sequences. Students should be given a worksheet (see sample
below) to guide their experience and promote accountability. The main
goal for the lesson is for students to realize that when their senses
are impaired their sport performance suffers.
Context: Shooting free throws at a basket or marked target (wall,
floor). Students may work in partners. Equipment: One ball and
jump rope per pair, worksheet, pencil. Task: Shoot 5 free throws
after (or while) experiencing each condition and attempt to make as many
as you can.
