April Weekly Observances

By David Kahan

Golden Rule Week: 1-7: A great time to review or expand the rules and routines that govern your class. At this point of the school year, having students do most of the talking or role playing would be more appropriate than controlling the discussion. Follow-up the discussion with students making their own lists of ways the Golden Rule could be implemented in physical education class or have students reflect on the week of April 1-7 by describing an incident in physical education class in which they either received or gave treatment from/to another student that was in keeping with the Golden Rule.

Explore Your Career Options Week: 14-18: Use this week to have students explore career options in sport. (There are tons more options than just professional athletics.) Logging into http://www.sportscareers.com/jobs/jobs.htm will allow students to learn about the thousands of careers in the industry. Pages of particular interest include: sample jobs, job profile, and industry overviews. Students can summarize their searches by listing and describing the 3-5 areas/jobs that interest them most and why.

Young People's Poetry Week: 14-20: This week presents an opportunity for your students to wax poetically about their sport and physical education experiences. Whether it's haiku, sonnet, ode, or free verse, writing good poetry is mental exercise that rivals high-intensity aerobics. Here's a poem of my own, penned 18 years ago, to get your wheels spinning.

The Odyssey

Behind the powder - tense and stiff,
I watch the gun cock and shift.
And then the sound erupts and thunders
As cheers ring out amid the wonders.

I begin my trek across the dirt.
I feel the pain and know the hurt.
Emptiness grows, as does the din.
I've survived two without sin.

Now the hand of triumph is within my reach.
The endless crowd begins to screech.
This noisy love lasts but a while,
For tomorrow I must run another mile.

National Coin Week: 20-26:In honor of this week, students can visit the following two web sites devoted to coins depicting sports (specifically the Olympics):

Joel Anderson (Private business selling coins) http://www.joelscoins.com/sports.htm
International Olympics Numismatics Organization: http://www.collectors.olympic.org/e/fino/index2.html

After navigating these two sites, students can design their own coins that would be emblematic of their own sport or recreational lives.

National TV Turn-off Week: 21-27: Have your school and students take the challenge of turning off the TV for an entire week. Facts and figures about America's TV habit are available at www.tvturnoff.org

Provide a list of substitute activities for students to engage in, particularly family activities. Wrap up the week with a brief reflective writing assignment based on the following probes:

  • What does a TV-free home look like?
  • What does a TV-free home sound like?
  • What does a TV-free home feel like?
