"More Public Relations Ideas"
(By Gerry Cernicky, Kiski Area School District, Allegheny/Hyde Park Elementary School)

There are many times, other than Parent/Teacher visitations that we can promote and sell our programs to the community and administrators. One of those can be a homepage that depicts our personal information, school activities, calendar, assignments and our curriculum framework. This can be accomplished by free sites from Tripod, Angelfire, Geocities, Homestead and a myriad of others. But there are other and more simpler avenues to pursue by using ready-made templates. This, of course, can also be used with knowledge of basic HTML, FTP and uploading techniques. Most of the sites have simple commands and tutorials to help with the process. Each site has its own vagaries but the end result can be a great public relations tool. Here are some examples of these sites along with the URL I have used to display information about my school and physical education program:

http://www.lightspan.com

http://yco.lightspan.com/mrcspeclasses

http://www.eboard.com

http://www.freebies.com

http://www.schoolnotes.com

http://schoolnotes.com/15656/gerc.html

http://www.familyeducation.com

My personal homepage may be found at the Tripod site to view some skills and activities:

http://members.tripod.com/~igreen/newpage.html A new authoring tool called SHOW MOTION is a wonderful way to add a new dimension and breath new life into an already established program. It can be found at this site: http://www.tripod.lycos.com

When the page is displayed click on the Show Motion link and follow the directions for the free download. This will provide a stunning slide show that uses text, files, snapshots, scanners and videos for a sparkling presentation. For a more effective slide show a web cam and Real Player software are a must. Captions and background music may be added for an exemplary, professional touch. I have practiced with two presentations at the following URL’S :

http://igreen.tripod.com/presentations/myschoolstuff/index.html

http://igreen.tripod.com/presentations/TECHNIQUES/index.html

For more information and help with the slide show contact me at

Ger@nb.net and remember that the Real Player program must be installed on a PC to view the presentation.
