In this edition
of Technology and Physical Education I would like to focus on ideas
and activities for the Winter season, including the Thanksgiving
Holiday season.
Also, there will be some information on the availability of news
sharing, and conventions on the local, state, and national levels.
Keeping abreast of technological issues and integrative techniques
will be discussed, that not only is a terminology addition, but
also offers ways to incorporate technology in the curriculum.

Digital Technology in PE:
Digital pictures: take photos of all your classes
and post on the bulletin board for the class of the month using
Hellison's Model. Use the photos to show skill.
progression: place the images on a school homepage. Make a slideshow
to show at Education Week.
Camcorder: take movies of the students in action
to be placed on a computer, or Smart Board, for all to review skills
and curriculum . With the proper cabling, the movies can be played
back instantly on a TV monitor.
Internet Competition: use instant messaging,
digital pics, and long distance learning to share in an 'integrative'
and 'fitness' program with schools in the global community in the
Tele-Olympics.
Fitness Calendar: a monthly
fitness guide that incorporates the entire family in engaging
activities, that is either sent home and completed, or placed on
a school homepage. Check out Bits

Sports Movies: take movies of the team in action
to be either placed on a CD, or homepage, to review or show skill

For Winter
& Thanksgiving...
Creativity will be a key issue at this time of year, which makes for
an interesting and integrative way to keep the students involved during
the Holiday season. This will be a wonderful way to utilize adapted
and makeshift equipment to meet the skill requirements of the curriculum.
Here are some examples to use, not only in class, but also at home
for the fitness calendar:
• |
Ditto wad balls as snowballs |
• |
Shoe boxes for ice skates |
• |
Cardboard slats for skis |
• |
Large box for toboggan |
• |
Scooter for a luge |
All of these can be incorporated in prelude to the Winter Olympics
theme. Contact the classroom teachers and other specialists (art,
music) to integrate with Math (metric), Science (temperature) and
Health for the diet of the athletes . Make country flags (art) and
songs of the countries (music).
Certificates can be found at: Teacher
Planet and Certificates
for Teachers
During a fitness or gymnastic unit, utilize locomotor skills in
station work, such as:
SLIDE on the floor lines
LEAP over the snow fort (tumbling mats)
JUMP over the fence (cones)
HOP over the icicles
CRAWL through the ice fort ( hoops)
Thanksgiving
Use adapted or homemade objects
Purchase a rubber chicken/turkey for each of four groups that are
arranged one behind the other.
The object is to run as a group in file formation with the first
person tossing the turkey over the head, in which the next person
must catch and repeat the process. After the toss go to the end
of the line. The groups will try to accomplish the tasks of never
dropping the object and counting the number of laps around the gym.
STATIONS : INTEGRATION
Volley a balloon with a turkey picture or one drawn with a magic
marker. Spell Thanksgiving with each letter a volley. Get a bedsheet
with a turkey drawn on it with an opening . This is where the turkey
will be stuffed by throwing safe objects into it. Establish a turkey
(feather) toss using bean bags thrown into a container (hoop, box,
milk crate, etc.).
LEAD UP ACTIVITIES:
Turkey Push: place a plastic, or blow up, turkey
on a tumbling mat (folded) for the students to push to a designated
line for a time limit. Divide the other half of the group to push
the mat back. Repeat until the time expires.
Turkey Tag: give half the students a rip flag
belt with a turkey (feather), a rip flag. Half the students are
Pilgrims and the other half are Turkeys. The Pilgrims have no rip
belts and try to steal the feathers. If stolen return to the Turkey
Pen and put on another. Reverse roles.
Turkey Trot: Align the class into four area on
the half court facing each other on the four lines. Give each group
a name ( turkeys, Pilgrims, mashed potatoes, stuffing ). Choose
one group to be taggers in the middle. One group, when called, runs
to the opposite side and repeat the process until all have run and
have a chance to be taggers. If tagged, go back to their starting
area. If not tagged, stay there until called to return to their
starting line. |

Here are some
articles to peruse from the coalition for promoting physical education:
Let's get a bit physical:
Take the stairs, walk around the block, do chores vigorously.
It all adds up and subtracts pounds. To burn more calories - and
let's face it, we Hoosiers need to burn more calories - we could
train for a marathon or work out in the gym five times a week.
But it doesn't have to be that hard. "We try to get people
to just move," said Heather Hedrick, assistant director of
educational services at the National Institute of Fitness and
Health. "Just get up and walk down the hallway, or go up
and down the stairs, or walk farther." Do something.
Indiana has one of the highest obesity rates in the country,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We're
not about to take that lying down, are we?
