In this edition of the Technology and Physical Education I would like
to focus on creating your own CD's and getting music from the Web.
Send me information on your
favorite music sites and how you use these sites to find music.
First you need to have a CD ReWriter on your computer.
Check out http://shopper.cnet.com/
for shopping on line for low costs, or checkout your local dealers
for prices. These are available for about $120 and up depending
on the features and software included. Next you need to
have music CD-R at a speed that you ReWriter will work with.
Once you are set up, you are ready to start.
-
Make sure that your computer has a CD burner
(writer).
-
Select the songs you want to use and create
a playlist. You can record tracks off of CD's that you
have and create custom files that have only music you use
in class.
-
Click on the 'CD-R' button under the playlist
window.
-
Indicate that you want to burn an "audio"
CD.
-
From the 'Create CD from Playlist' window, confirm
that your CD format and song list are correct.
-
Click the 'Create CD' button.
-
Enjoy your new CD until you get tired of it.
Then, make a new one!
If you are downloading music from Web sites such
as www.mp3.com or www.listen.com
or other sources. Use your favorite search engine to find
music sites. There is some free music available, but with
the lawsuits involving Napster and other sites there may be a
charge for downloading music.
You may need a program to convert MP3 files
to wav formats for use in CD players. One free program is
available from www.MUSICMATCH.com
that can convert files. If you have an MP3 player you can
use the MP3 format without converting the file.
Try out making your own files and let me know how
it works for you. Share your thoughts with me, my e-mail address is mdumin@radford.edu.
Sincerely,
Dr.

What is this MP3, now the No. 1 Internet search
term? It must be something important, right.
MP3 is an encoding process rids a track of
unnecessary information, things that we would never hear anyway.
It reduces a standard digital audio track to about 1/12 of its
original size, usually without an appreciable loss of quality.
It's a tiny package, perfectly suited to our current Internet
bandwidth limitations. You can download MP3s as quickly and
easily as you download a Flash movie. Start the download,
get a drink of water, return to your computer, and there it
is-a CD-quality song occupying about 4 MB of disk space. And
that's where the trouble can begin.
MP3 is legal, although there are illegal uses out
there. www.MP3.com or www.rioport.com/
are the easiest places to start. Now you find a whole bunch of tracks,
arranged in order of popularity and by types of music. www.MP3.com
gives you the option of playing the files before you download them
using Realplayer. The way to do this is click the type of music
you want, I used children's music,to find a list of tracks.
I clicked on "The Itsy Bitsy Reggae Spider"
by Lionel
and Kizzy and this most often takes us to another page featuring
the track we want to play and download, an artist biography, and
other tracks by the artist. Scrolling through the list, I also found
"Jammin' Hokey Pokey" and "If You're Happy And You
Know It" by the same artist. These could be used in class.
In the rock area there is some surf music that will work for rhythms
or background music.

www.mp3.com can be used to find
free music.
www.emusic.com is one of
the top online music destinations. It has licensed content from
many record labels and sells it for a small fee, usually 99 cents
to $1.49 per song.
www.listen.com is a
good place to find tracks, both free ones and low-cost single downloads.
Listen.com does not host its own songs but, points to other sites
that do.
www.rollingstone.com
offers information on various artists and lots of free downloads.
See if you can find what you want. Use your favorite serarch
engine to free music and single cuts at a reasonable cost.

Effective Teaching Breakthrough - Immediate Feedback Video
Author, Jim Coleman, believes that "Immediate Feedback Video" now offers a fantastic new opportunity for improving skill instruction.
We all know that video feedback can be very helpful with beginning learners and experts. The problem with video however is that the whole process is so slow. Recording, rewinding, then viewing takes too much time. And the thought of doing it for a whole class or team is mind boggling.
Solution? The Tivo Personal Video Recorder. The key to the value of a "Tivo" is that it allows you to record one learner, watch the playback, while simultaneously recording a second learner. This way you can record an entire class or team, and give feedback without any need to swap tapes or rewind.
Read more about the exciting instructional possibilities this equipment offers in Jim's article.
