 Exploring P.E. on the Web

Mr. I's P.E. & Sports Home Page

The World Wide Web can be an extremely valuable teaching tool in your physical education classes. We'll explore cyberspace in physical education using my web page, Mr. I's P.E. and Sports Home Page. This month we'll look at some characteristics of a well-designed web page.

Web Page Title
The "title" of the web page should provide the visitor to the site a general idea of the subject matter contained in the page. When a viewer clicks on, he or she will immediately know that Mr. I's website focuses on physical education and sports.

Monthly Theme
The "monthly theme" presents a main idea, or activity, that should be of interest to the visitor during a specific month, or period of time. It contains information of national or regional interest.

Local News and Information
This section provides information specific to the webmaster's locality. It should also be of interest to the visitor.

Biographical Information
This section introduces the reader to the web page creator. Allowing the visitor to "get to know" Mr. I. establishes a reader/writer relationship that makes the web page more personal! Comfort, and an inviting environment, encourages the visitor to return!

Where Does Mr. I Work?
The "Physical Education at Mark Twain Elementary" section presents an overview of the structure and content of the physical education program. Here the reader can become informed about the specific program, as well as compare and contrast it with his or her own p.e. program; always an interesting activity!

We'll continue to explore Mr. I's P.E. and Sports Home Page in the next issue!

Have a great summer!

Build a Box of Friendship

Into a box of friendship
To insure that it is strong
First a layer of respect
On the bottom does belong
Then to the sides attach
In the corners where they meet
Several anchors full of trust
Devoid of all deceit
The height of friendship can be measured
By the sides of four
So make them all a larger cut
And the box will hold much more
Now fill it up with courtesy
Honor and esteem
Understanding, sympathy
And passion for a dream
Add to that your honesty
Emotions joy and love
And since they're so important
Place them up above
But leave the box wide open
So all can see inside
To learn what makes a friendship work
From the box you built with pride

Using Technology in P.E. Class!
by Tom Winiecki

We have used technology in our teaching for a while now. Here is something that we are doing right now:

Fitness Stations with Pulse Monitors and Spreadsheets
We always strive to stress "heart rate" in all of our teaching at Mott Road Elementary School. It is part of everything that we do all year. Whether directly, or indirectly, having our students trying to "hit the target" is constantly covered.

For each activity we do, we constantly ask the kids to tell us "if their heart is going fast" (K-2), or to take their pulse to see if they made it hit the "target range." This tells them if they played the game the right way. Fitness, as a result is taught all of the time!

We still do run a "fitness unit." This gives us the opportunity to really stress "target heart rate" and exercise intensity with our students. We set up 11 stations in the gym. Ten of the stations are activities to be done. The 11th station is a computer. We are fortunate to have a computer line into our gym. It connects to the school's server.

Our 3rd to 4th graders go through the stations. After each station is complete (3:00-4:00), they all take their pulse and record it on a sheet that we give them. At some of the stations (usually station #s 7-10), we have hand held pulse monitors. When they are at these stations, the students use the monitors to get their heart rates.

When a student has completed stations 7 - 10, they next go to computer station 11. They do not go to the computer station until they have data recorded for stations 7, 8, 9, 10. In other words, if they started at station 10, their next station would be #1, not #11 (the computer). They would go to station #11 at the end of class when they finish station #9.

Here, we have set up a spreadsheet (on Microsoft Excel, but we used to have Claris Works for the Macs and set up a spreadsheet with that also). We enter the heart rate data from stations 7-10 into the spreadsheet. That spreadsheet then converts the information into a graph that we print out and give to the kids to take home that very day!

This has turned out to be a great way to show our kids still further the idea that their heart rate is tied to their activity level. We purposely make the last stations (#'s 7-10) ones that require different levels of intensity to complete. This way the kids get to see the difference in heart rates better in different activities. For example, we may set up scooters, toss and catch, basketball shooting from a spot, and jumping rope. The difference in activity levels at each of these stations is easily shown when the data is graphed.

We have used this format for a few years now and have gotten great results. The kids all go home and tell their parents that they "used a computer in gym today!"
