 Integrated Teaching Ideas

Jumping into Math

Objective: Children learn proper jumping techniques while learning to measure accurately.

Equipment:
Measuring device (ruler, yardstick, meter stick, tape measure, etc.)
Paper & pencil (observe safety protocols)

In small groups (2-3) children take turns jumping (horizontal jump) and measuring each others' jumps. Each child should have 3 attempts at each type of jump, then average the 3 attempts.

Types of jumps:
Begin with arms folded across one's chest and body in crouch (hips, knees, ankles bent)
Begin with arms back, and minimal bend in hips, knees, and ankles)
Begin in crouch and arms back (proper technique)

Children average their different jumps and "discover" the best method for jumping for distance.

You must be careful how you walk,
and where you go, for there are
those following you who will set
their feet where yours are set.
