CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP CALENDAR

 Editorial

I had the opportunity to attend the Buffalo Bills training camp that is housed near by. I didn't go last year and thought that it would be a good idea for me to see what goes on there because so many of my students attended last year. I went the first day by myself. I took my grown daughter the second day and took my husband the third day. What impressed me most besides the incredible organization was how patient and kind the ball players were to the autograph seekers at the end of their practice. People are yelling out their names, asking for gloves and bandanas, shoving items in their face to get signatures...the football players patiently sign many items...some of them chatting with the people along the fence. I watched these big guys and wondered what their physical education classes were like...what impact those classes had on their lives...and wondered if we as physical educators somehow made a difference.

Obesity Among Children
by Alvin Poussaint

Obesity Epidemic
It's not "cool" to be fat, but that has not prevented an obesity epidemic from occurring among American youth. Childhood obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to about 13 percent in 1994. Today, it is about 20 percent -- and rising.

Practice is the best instruction of them all.
