 Featured Resources

Netfit

Try this site to garner information for articles, animations, text, and resources about the weight room, aerobic room, stretching, nutrition, supplements, body fat, personal trainers, calculators, and anatomy.

Digital Curriculum

This program is an Internet streaming curriculum video on demand service, consisting of three libraries of 500 video programs. The product includes correlations of titles to state and national standards. There is an online quiz with immediate feedback to the student, and an e-mail report for the teacher. Teachers and students have unlimited access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days of the year. Included are activity guides, downloads, quizzes, and print outs. There is a 30 day trial offer to try out the program.

mysportsguru.com

If you want sports skills, drills, animations, coaching tips, troubleshooting guide, and hints from the top coaches in the country, then this is the place to visit. Included are: Baseball, basketball, bowling, fly fishing, golf, inline skating, soccer, and tennis. Individual interests are easily accessible through easy to navigate links.

Quick Click

This unique program uses a visible underline, or designated pointer, as a search engine that will take you to the site, give valuable information, access links, and provide resources without leaving your browser. An alternative may be used by pressing (ALT) and the printed word on homepages or e-mail messages.

Wotch

Try out some free e-books that come to your desktop each week, or by e-mail, to inform you of new books and activities. Included are three books on the past Olympic games in Australia.

 Teaching Ideas

Electrifier

Want a new way to spice up a homepage with dramatic music, text, animations, and lessons? Then check out this site for an easy tutorial and template, but be aware that this program is for ad or auctions. Instead, place any text in the blank spaces to change the format. Just in case move over to Bits and Bytes for an example. Go to Helpful Hints and you will need the Flash Player to view the show.

Brainpop

This is another welcome addition to any homepage for an animated view of online quizes, lessons, and activity pages. It is broadcast by cartoon characters that present material in an easy, but effective way to teach.

Co-operative Discipline

Included in this valuable resource are class management styles, strategies for success, and codes of conduct.

Dodge ball - the Great Debate

I think the time has come to settle this problem. It is inappropriate to throw objects at another person. Substitute a cage ball/kinball, or anything inanimate that will not cause bodily harm. End of story...and if you want to read more about this debate, search the archives of pe-talk and the NASPE-L. You can also add your own opinion by visiting the PE Forum.

TeleOlympics

The Organization For Community Networks (OFCN) will be hosting The Academy's 2001 TeleOlympics from April 23 to May 9, 2001. It is open to school-age children worldwide (ages 6-18) with the ability to send and receive electronic mail over the Internet. The TeleOlympics2001 is a project where students go out into their schoolyards on the same day and "compete" in events involving running, jumping, and throwing. Results are then sent electronically to The Academy. This year we are pleased to announce that along with events for handicapped students in wheelchairs, we have added events for students requiring crutches or walkers. Special rules have been established for wheelchair students.

Information regarding each school will be exchanged using a listserv called acad-olympics. This listserv will be available as of February 7, 2001. In addition, each message will be posted to OFCN's - The Academy TeleOlympics01 Discussion web page.

Details on the TeleOlympics:

  • Class A = ages 16-18
  • Class B = ages 14-15
  • Class C = ages 12-13
  • Class D = ages 10-11
  • Class E = ages 8-9
  • Class F = ages 6-7
List of Events:
  • 50 meter run
  • Tennis ball throw
  • Long jump (choose either standing or running for your school)
  • 200 meter run (limited to crutch/walker TeleOlympians)
  • 400 meter run (for all ages)
  • 800 meter run (for Class A, B, C, D and E)
  • 1600 meter run (for Class A, B, C and D)
Funattic

A nice site for free games, game of the month, great game list, and an activity guide.

2001 PE Challenge

Although all the free pins for the 2001 PE Challenge have already been reserved, you can still order them or print your own "Challenge" certificates. Don't be left out!

Kids and Fitness

You and your students can join in on two teleprojects based on physical fitness. Students can create a virtual athlete by looking at the various characteristics that make an athlete great. Or, students can work in a class team and compete with classes all over the world to increase their physical activity for the week of April 25-May 4, 2001.
