Youth Sports has received much attention lately in the media
due to many incidences of violence. Much of the discussion has related
to how to solve this problem. There are no easy answers. As the
discussion continues we hope to bring forth some ideas in this forum.
For this issue, however, general topics on youth sports are highlighted.

Articles
in this section are generally (but not always) full length articles
that address timely issues in coaching and sports. They provide
readers with in-depth coverage and often include links or resources
on the topic.
Winning
the Stanley Cup Final Series is Related to Incurring Fewer Penalties
for Violent Behavior
This
is a summary of research by Steven McCaw and John Walker indicating
that new evidence from research on violence in hockey supports the
notion that teams with fewer penalty minutes for violent behaviors
have greater performance success.

The
Boston Globe
ran a four part series describing various problems encountered in
youth sports programs. Although these articles predate the recent
bout of violence in youth sports they are still an important source
of information and opinions.

Do
you coach more than one sport?
eteamz
offers
one of the most comprehensive sources of drills and coaching tips
for a wide variety of sports.
Are
parents bugging you for resources about being a sports parent? Send
them to kid-e-sport.com
a web site created specifically to be a resource center for parents
of young athletes. They may also want to visit Momsteam.
Although
produced with moms in mind, the site is useful to all parents of
young athletes.
How
do you decide which web site to go to to get information to enhance
your coaching skills? Just five year ago there were virtually
no sites available that provided information for coaches at any
level, from youth sport novice coaches up through elite level
coaches. That has all changed.
Two sites specifically for youth sport coaches have been mentioned
in earlier editions of PELINKS4U. Coaching
Youth Sports,
edited by this section editor, and Spotlight
on Youth Sports, from
the Michigan State Youth Sports Institute, have both been on line
for over four years and offer reliable, science based information.
Coaching Youth Sports typically offers short, applied articles
with the less experienced coach in mind.
Spotlight on Youth Sports articles are usually longer and seem
to be more appropriate for the more experienced coach. Both are
excellent resources for improving coaching skill and often contain
information coaches can pass along to their athletes and the athletes'
parents.

What
is the future of information resources and skill learning resources? A
new web site recently launched and still in development may give us a
glimpse of the future.
Athlete.com
presents
a combination of text based skill instruction paired with digital video
clips of the skill or strategy being presented. At this time only their
hockey section is functional but they claim more sports are on the way.

How
up to date are you on safety related concerns? These web sites are sources
of information to help you stay prepared and knowledgeable about sport
safety issues.

Weather
safety: this article provides tips and other web sites as resources for
dealing with inclement weather. Included are links to two lightning storm

The
Locker Room-Sports for Kids
This
site developed by S.
Poole is an excellent source of information for introducing young
children new to a sport. The site contains history, rules. skills, and
drills for twelve sports. I would also recommend it as an information
source for parents who are new to their children's sport.
