Keeping current is a never ending struggle for coaches. Not only are you expected to know the latest information in your particular sport, but parents and athletes seem to be convinced that the title 'coach' automatically makes you knowledgeable in all areas of athletics. We hope that this section of PELinks4U will offer opportunities for you to acquire information that you might not otherwise be able to.

Articles in this section are generally (but not always) full length articles that address timely issues in coaching and sports. They provide readers with in-depth coverage and often include links or resources on the topic.
Using Goal Setting:
The May/June issue of Coaching Youth Sports was a thematic issue devoted to goal setting. The Feature article describes the concept of goal setting. The guidelines for using goal setting are described in the Coach's article. The parent's role in the use of goal setting is described in the Parent's Perspective. Finally, athletes are encouraged to do their part by becoming risk-takers.

Developing Sportsmanship
With all of the media attention about violence in youth and school sports, it is only natural that a discussion of the development of
sportsmanship will evolve.
What do we really know about how participation in sports effects a child's character? Can coaches teach or model sportsmanship, or do we end up developing a win-at-all costs perspective in young athletes?
There are in increasing number of web sites available devoted to discussion of character development and sportsmanship in sports.
The Positive Coaching Alliance is under the direction of Jim Thompson and his
colleagues at Stanford. The Josephson Institute of Ethics sponsors Character Counts, which is a program that can be adopted by local organizations and agencies.
Several sports governing bodies have pulled together to form the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance.
The University of Notre Dame hosts the Mendelson Center for Sport, Character, and Culture which presents frequent speakers and will host a major conference on sport and character in May 2001.

Aggression in Sports:
It may just be a matter of semantics, but do you understand the difference between aggressive behavior and assertive behavior? When you tell your athletes to play aggressively today, what do you really mean?

How up to date are you on appropriate use of strength and conditioning activities for athletes?
Strength training, especially the use of weight training,
has become somewhat controversial in sports programs for
children and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics
issued a policy
statement in 1990 describing their position on strength
training, weight lifting, and body building in children and
adolescents. The National
Strength and Conditioning Association also has produced
a position statement which can be purchased from them.
Greg
Gentry, football coach at Mt. Tabor (NC) High School
offers his perspective on the appropriate selection of
strength training activities depending on the grade level of
the athlete. Damon
Lee provides athletes with specific guidelines to follow
during strength training.
