Students with Disabilities
|
Start school off with 'Disability Awareness in Physical Activity'.
All students can benefit from information and activities regarding
people with disabilities. This site provides a variety of activities
that can be conducted over a number of days (4-5) within physical
education classes. Check
it out!!!
For younger children a disability
awareness site can provide information about people with disabilities.
Users of this site can also obtain answers to a number of questions
regarding disability. Young children will love the colorful, interactive
site.
Too powerful of an awareness site!!! High
school students in New York have composed articles addressing 'disability'.
This site can definitely provide insight to all of us in light of
the latest conflicts of our nation!
How about trying some creative activities with your students? Dance
as a form of physical activity for students with disabilities has
MANY benefits, especially for the affective learning domain! Check
out 'Groupie Dances', 'Social and World Dances' from the Project
INSPIRE web page. The directions for the dances, possible music,
the movement steps, and adaptations for movement steps are provided.
A more broad-base site for the arts is published by the National
Arts and Disability Center. This site provides a wealth of information
about dance and other performing arts. Options in the site include:
a resource database for art classes, art services, and funding sources;
a library with links to articles and annotated bibliographies; a
variety of 'arts' topics; links to visual arts, galleries &
exhibitions, and artists; and an on-line gallery of artists who
are disabled and their work.
Looking for dance groups/companies to perform in your area? Check
out this site for a listing of nine groups/companies. Their
web pages provide the history of their group, a list of performers,
their upcoming performances, and details of how you might book them
for a performance within your community.

Play practice: The games approach
to teaching and coaching sports. Launder, A. G. (2001).
After hearing Alan Launder speak at the International Conference
2001: Teaching Games for Understanding in Physical Education and
Sport, I recommend this book for anyone who works with youth, able-bodied
or disabled. Launder presents the approach, 'play practice' as a
way to teach game play first instead of the traditional skill approach.
By using this approach in teaching and coaching, ALL students can
enhance their understanding of game concepts, thus increasing their
success level.
