Welcome to PELINKS4U
PELINKS4U saw another new visitor record of 5800 site hits last Tuesday. Of course this sounds great until you remember that there must be more than 100,000 PE teachers throughout the USA alone! Please continue to encourage your colleagues and students to register for PE-News and visit this site. Be sure to let us know if you have suggestions for effective ways of contacting schools and PE teachers. It is a very time consuming task tracking these folk down yet most are delighted when they discover the resources available through this site.

As noted below the PE-Forum is ready and waiting for your use. My students at CWU have already told me that logging in can at first be kind of confusing but once you've jumped that hurdle it is pretty simple to read and post messages. Please give it a try.

If you will be attending any of the workshops or conferences coming up please consider sending us a report or comments. We also invite you to email us any suggestions for articles, links, or news items to include in forthcoming issues. Thanks for your support.

PE-Forum
The new "PE-Forum" is now up and running - well maybe just jogging! We are so used to exchanging ideas via the listservs that the idea of using a message board may take a while to catch on. If you think about it there are many advantages of a forum. Postings are permanent, organized by topic, and easily accessible. Give it a try and the next time you have a question invite folk to post responses on the PE-Forum.

Physical Education on the Move

Two popular attitudes have been and still are bedeviling PE as a school subject. One is the attitude, popular in lay circles that PE is a time for free play, just roll out the ball and run. The other attitude, popular among various medal mongers, is that PE should be a direct preparation for adult, elite sport and a minicopy of them irrespective of developmental stage of children or students. An article by J.W Psaila from Malta.

Lessons Learned About Student Portfolios
The idea of going beyond test scores to collect more substantive evidence of a school's curriculum and teaching initiatives seemed innovative a decade ago. What they didn't know then was that the process of selecting samples of work and assembling them into a portfolio is profoundly important to children.

Finding Time to Exercise
If being fit and trim is a high priority for you, but you don't have the time or just don't want to go to a gym to work out, here's some good news: you can get fit and trim without joining a gym or without practicing Taebo three hours a day.

Middle School PE News
Most US middle schools have physical activity areas -- but few students visit these areas outside of physical education classes, and many of those who do visit just "hang out" rather than exercise. With teen obesity levels rising, researchers suggest that a valuable opportunity to encourage kids to exercise at school is being lost. More structured programs and supervision to encourage more physical activity could help.

Caffeinated Kids
Over the past few years, caffeinated soda consumption among children has increased. Concerns are increasing about health effects now and later.
